About us
Surfers Against Sewage is a national marine conservation and campaigning charity that inspires, unites and empowers communities to take action to protect the ocean and our blue spaces. Home to the Million Mile Clean, Plastic Free Communities, Plastic Free Schools and the Safer Seas & Rivers Service. Our Campaigns Water Quality - Sewage and agricultural pollution still plague the rivers and ocean. We are calling for an end to sewage pollution to guarantee safe seas, all year round. Our ambition is to end sewage discharges into UK bathing waters by 2030. Ocean & Climate - To reverse the ocean and climate crisis, we need urgent and drastic reduction in carbon dioxide emissions as well as the rapid embracing of nature-based solutions to limit carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Our ambition is for the UK to be net-zero by 2030. Ocean Recovery - The UK’s seas host some of the most biodiverse life in the world. However, due to the increasing pressure from human activities, marine biodiversity has decreased dramatically. Our ambition is for 30% of the ocean and all UK Marine Protected Areas to be highly protected by 2030. Plastic Pollution - To solve the plastic pollution crisis, we need to reduce the production and consumption of non-essential single-use, throwaway and polluting plastic, and build a circular economy that ensures plastics are designed to be reused and repaired. Our ambition is to end single-use plastic pollution on UK beaches by 2030.

Yesterday our Protecting Wild Waters (PPW) Team joined Ruth Leach from @savethedeben to spend a day meeting the community to find out why designated bathing water status is vital for water users. We met with Citizen Scientists who are investigating the health of the river and estuary - and how that impacts recreational water users and nature. 🏊♂️ Councillors, young people and local MP @jenny4suffolkcoastal met at The Deben Yacht Club to discuss the concerns for the river. Jenny said - “I'm delighted to continue to support the work of Save the Deben, Surfers Against Sewage, and all the other local campaigners who are dedicated to improving water quality - both here in the Deben, across Suffolk and nationally. Our rivers and seas are the jewel in our Suffolk crown, and I'm determined to make sure that we take this chance to improve our local water quality, and ensure that Suffolk leads the way in creating safe and clean recreational water sites for more people to enjoy." ⛵- Kyson Point at the mouth of Martelsham Creek, is the most polluted area, right by the largest sewage plant on the river. 🏊- Waldringfield, the site of the first designated bathing water on The Deben. This is where the local community come to swim, paddle and sail. 🧪- With thanks to the efforts of Citizen Scientists, like @debenclimatecentre the threats the Deben faces are clear. From river fly monitoring to eDNA this community is filling the gaps of an underfunded regulator. A big thanks to the Deben Estuary Partnership and all of the other groups who were represented during the day, it is incredible see so many committed people working towards a better river.
