Structural Soils

A ground investigation is underway in the rear courtyard at Canada House. As part of the work funded by the The National Lottery Heritage Fund Development Grant, Structural Soils are undertaking a ground investigation in the rear courtyard behind Canada House. Structural Soils are specialists in geoenvironmental ground investigation and are working with Arup, our engineers on the project.    They are digging 3 trial pits and drilling 2 boreholes to a depth of 30m! This will all be analysed back in the lab. Their job is to ensure that the Harmony Works’ design team know as much as possible about what lies beneath the tarmac courtyard to inform the foundations for the new staircase, lifts, and new rehearsal space.

Recent Work Placements at Structural Soils We had a busy end to June and beginning of July, welcoming students of all ages into the Old School for their initial experiences in the working life of a geotechnical engineer. Thanks to Michael Addinall for facilitating these events. Our recent placements included: Alfie – 1 week placement, A-level student from Kings Of Wessex Community School, Cheddar – 40 hours Dorcas – 1 week GCSE work experience, Bridge Learning Campus, Hartcliffe – 40 hours Michael – 1 week GCSE work experience, Bridge Learning Campus, Hartcliffe – 40 hours Ethan – 2 weeks with Career Confident Cardiff University (Geology Graduate), 2 weeks independent work experience – 160 hours in total In total, we provided 280 hours of work placements. During their time with us, the students participated in various activities to give them a comprehensive taste of what it’s like to work as a geotechnical engineer, including: *Full site Health & Safety induction *Preliminary site risk assessment / desk study *Tour of SSL Geotechnical Laboratories *The geology of Structural Soils – The ground beneath our feet *An introduction to site investigation *Rock core logging, photography, and subsampling We are proud to support the next generation of geotechnical engineers by providing these valuable experiences. part of the RSK Group
