It’s a pleasure to share our next CEO Spotlight short, featuring industry veteran Dr Mary Kerr, CEO of NeRRe Therapeutics Ltd, and ex-CEO and Co- founder of #KaNDyTherapeutics, who discusses the development of both businesses. KaNDy Therapeutics was sold to Bayer for an upfront payment of $475m, as well as possible Regulatory and Commercial milestone resulting in a potential deal value of > $1billion, in 2020 for the development of #Elinzanetant, a hormone-free menopause treatment for women. In January, Bayer announced positive Phase 3 results of the ex-KaNDy compound to treat symptoms of the menopause. Bayer have announced that they will be filing Elinzanetant to US and EU regulators later this year. Earlier in the year, Mary, who sits on the BioInnovation Institute's Women’s Health Innovation Panel, spoke at SBC’s International Women’s Day event, candidly discussing her career journey and passion for developing treatments to benefit #women’shealth: “The ex-KaNDy compound, now owned by Bayer, has great promise. If approved, it would be the first in a new class of dual mechanism non-hormonal treatments for the menopause. This would be an enormous milestone in the treatment of the menopause. Women’s health has been chronically under-funded for decades. The recent McKinsey report concluded that closing the gender health gap could reduce the time women spend in poor health by almost two-thirds and add up to US$1tn to the global economy by 2040.” NeRRe Therapeutics Ltd is a clinical-stage company developing Orvepitant, a treatment for the disabling chronic cough associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Sykes BA, MCIPR FRSA 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 and Donna Schultz.   Guests from across the region came to learn more about the development of #Stevenage’s life science ecosystem via talks from Dr Sally Ann Forsyth OBE, SBC's CEO, and Paul Witcombe, Sector Lead: Life Sciences and Advanced Manufacturing at Hertfordshire Futures, and Anthony Downes, Estate Director at Hatfield Park.   A fascinating panel followed, with debates around R&D tax credits, the emergence of a cell and gene therapy cluster in Stevenage, and the importance of retaining intellectual capital in the UK, with panellists Prof Claire Thompson, CEO Agility Life Sciences (SBC previous occupant), Darragh Murnane, Professor of Pharmaceutics at the University of Hertfordshire, Dr Abigail Martin, CEO and Co-Founder ImmuONE and Tiba Rao, Director of Innovation and Co-founder, Soar Beyond Ltd   We were also very pleased to welcome another special member to the audience, Abigail Martin's seven-month-old son, who enjoyed a spot of networking at the close of the event. #stevenage #cellandgene #stevenage #herfordshire #sciencepark #healthinnovation

MFX’s Antoine Espinet, CEO, and Lindsey Clarke, VP of Commercial, opened the event, explaining the necessity of creating a culture of mutual respect where all employees feel welcome and accepted, regardless of gender, religion, sexual orientation and background. Panelists James Kusena PhD , VP of Operations at MFX, Sheila Johnson, HR Consultant across the life sciences industry, Pedro Correa de Sampaio, CEO and Co Founder of Neobe Therapeutics, candidly discussed why making time for inclusivity is vital for successful R&D. Panel Highlights: 🌟 Creating a culture of belonging from start-up to scale-up: feeling safe to express needs based on a shared respect for one and other, feeling comfortable to show up as your ‘authentic self’ and how this impacts desire to go above and beyond – the space where ground breaking R&D can happen 🌟 Challenging biased communications: how to address ‘getting it wrong’, apologising if necessary, learning how to adapt language, importance of nuanced one-to-one responses to support human relationships 🌟 Allyship: why it can be necessary to speak up for those who might not feel heard to make positive changes, recognising that diversity doesn’t always mean inclusivity, reflecting on and addressing unconscious bias After the thought-provoking panel, guests took part in breakout groups to discuss their approach to creating intentionally inclusive cultures, inclusive recruitment and consequentially measuring input. We were also delighted to have three students with interests in science careers join us from #Hertfordshire for the event. MFX took the trio on a tour of their laboratory and hosted an individual Q&A workshop on health innovation with some of their scientists! We look forward to welcoming more young people to future events. Delighted to host POM Health, the LAB Hotel's latest residents, at today’s Occupier Lunch here at Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst! Mariajosé Argote and Stefan-Tudor Ilie PhD, co-founders of the women’s health innovation start-up, were one of the winning businesses who took part in SBC’s 2024 #Catalyser #accelerator programme. They were selected by judges for developing a winning commercialisation strategy to help deliver their science to market: a 24 hour hormone monitor for women that uses technology to check levels for real time results and stay ahead of any changes, without the need for blood tests and delays. Majo and Stefan have consequently received six months’ free space in the Lab Hotel to help support the development of POM Health’s innovation. 🌤🍧 🥙 A few highlights from our Summer Social for SBC occupiers! Over 300 came along, with businesses and their staff enjoying the (mostly) sunny weather, food trucks, ice creams and our new deckchairs, taking shelter under our stretch tent when the wind kicked up! 🍫 🎫 🎾To add a touch of informal networking fun, SBC hosted a treasure hunt, with questions leading teams across the Campus to claim ice cream tokens, free gym passes, and be in with a chance to win a chocolate giftbox – which went to Plurify, who managed to successfully count all of the Incubator building’s solar windows, list the Thermo Fisher Scientific vending machine temperatures, and identify the species of tree in our outdoor Plaza, amongst many more. 👒 🎩 👑 It was great to see so many businesses taking part in our Summer hat theme to raise awareness and funds for local educational charity STEMPOINT. The #Stevenage based #charity promotes widened access to #STEM for local children and encourages equal educational opportunities. Antikor Biopharma Ltd CEO, Mahendra Deonarain won the best hat title, with his golf course ⛳ themed beret.
