With the General Election result still in our rearview mirror and the great news of Peter, Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill's appointment as Minister of State in DfT we should expect considerable ambition for change and momentum in the sector. But what should be the priorities, what levers pulled and what are the risks ahead? It will be my pleasure to be live in conversation with Howard Smith OBE, Chief Operating Officer for London Rail, at our ‘Rail in 30: Renationalisation, reform & revival’ event on Tue 6 Aug at 2.00pm. We're going to discuss the agenda for the next five years and the needed reforms of the sector. Will we be able to cover this in just 30 minutes? Howard and I are going to attempt it! The Steer Strikers put in a Euros-worthy performance by winning their 5-a-side football tournament at the inaugural Bankside games last week! ⚽ Highlights included Matthew Jones scoring multiple hat-tricks and Harshil Patel saving two penalties in the quarter-final. It was a wonderful occasion, with all the match fees going to the Bankside Open Spaces Trust - a charity working to protect, preserve and enhance parks and gardens, while organising free afterschool sports for primary school children in London’s SE1 and surrounding areas. Last year, more than 510 bills were introduced in state legislatures across the United States which sort to change the protections of of LGBTQ people - more than the last three years combined. Though most of these bills ultimately fail, they still have tangible political, psychological and economic consequences. Some of these consequences include the loss of revenue and opportunity through boycotts, decreased talent attraction with many young workers choosing to avoid states with discriminatory legislatures, reduced tourism as businesses avoid holding conferences in unwelcoming and unsafe states, and increased poverty amongst the LGBTQ community. Nicola Kane, Director in our Manchester office reflects on the passing of Sir Howard Bernstein, who led the city through one of its most formative eras as council chief executive (1998-2017):   “We were saddened to learn of the death of this visionary leader, who had a deep understanding of the importance of investing in a modern, integrated transport system to drive regeneration and economic growth across Greater Manchester and the North."   “He also helped build consensus over strategic priorities across the ten local authorities, recognising that Greater Manchester would be much more successful at attracting public and private investment when it spoke with one voice. I don’t think we would have reached the level of consensus we’ve had over transformative transport investments such as expansion of Metrolink or bus franchising without Sir Howard’s vision and energy.”   “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time, and I know we will all spend the coming weeks and months reflecting on the lasting impact of his incredible legacy”.
