Over 5,000 Southwark workers receive pay rise thanks to the London Living Wage ✨ Bosco Katabazi, cleaner at Borough Market: “I can afford to pay my bills and pay my bills on time. That’s because I work for company that pays the London Living Wage.” Carla Sofia Cardso Pinto, food services co-ordinator at Spring Community Hub: “I can now do more with my children and afford to buy a car. It has helped me in my personal life a lot.” Tash Gorst, founder of Gather: “Business is about people, so it matters how you treat yours. We've always paid the Living Wage. Our staff are the heart of Gather; they care, they’re engaged and they stick around - for much longer than is typical for retail.” Sarah Kingston and Alex Birtles, co-founders of In Good Company: “We believe paying a fair wage is the cornerstone of being a good business. It’s a principle we wholeheartedly advocate for and encourage all the businesses we support to embrace.” Dr Dima Mekdad, executive director of Candoco Dance Company: “Paying London Living Wage as a minimum in our pay structure is essential and reflects our values. The accreditation was important to us as we would like to advocate for this in the wider networks we are working with.”   Cllr Kieron Williams, leader of Southwark Council: “The message is loud and clear: the London Living Wage is good for workers, good for business, and good for our local economy. That’s why we established the council’s Living Wage Unit to support employers to pay the London Living Wage. We are proud that Southwark leads the way with more and more employers who think, like us, that people deserve to be paid fairly for their hard work. It's more important than ever with the rising cost of living.” The number of #Southwark employers who pay the #LondonLivingWage grows month on month. In large part this is thanks to a group of local organisations who campaign to make Southwark a #LivingWagePlace If you are an employer interested in accreditation please contact [email protected]. You can also apply to a grant which cover three years accreditation fees. Living Wage Foundation

This week Southwark residents celebrated the launch of Una Marson Library 🎉 The first public library named after a black woman has officially opened. The Una Marson Library opens amid nationwide library closures and marks the latest milestone in the ongoing redevelopment of the Aylesbury area. The library’s launch was marked with a community event attended by esteemed broadcaster, author, and entrepreneur, June Sarpong, OBE, and Southwark Council Leader, Cllr Kieron Williams The celebration featured performances by the Walworth Academy Steel Pan Band, as well as captivating poetry readings and talks from Jenny Mitchell, India Jones-Aryeh, Stephen Bourne, Rosa-Johan Uddoh and, Curtis Brown. The library pays homage to Una Marson, a revered Southwark heroine hailed for her contributions to the literary world and as the first Black woman programme maker at the BBC. Leader of Southwark Council, Councillor Kieron Williams, said: “We are proud to open the first public library in the country named after a black woman. Una Marson led an incredible life and I hope her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. “Whether you are one or ninety one, it is a wonderful space to learn, relax, and enjoy, and is the sixth new library we have opened in Southwark since 2010." #UnaMarson, a Jamaican-born feminist, arrived in the UK in 1932 where she was helped by Dr Harold Moody, another of Southwark’s great Black activists, who offered her a room at his family home on the Queen’s Road in Peckham. It was during the Second World War that Una became the BBC’s first Black programme maker. She broadcasted messages from servicemen and women in England, to their friends and families in the Caribbean, in her popular weekly series: Calling the West Indies. In 2009 a Blue Plaque was unveiled at her former home on Brunswick Square in Camberwell. #UnaMarsonLibrary #Libraries #southwark #TeamSouthwark #PeoplePowered #greatsouthwarkteams #community #regeneration #PoweredByOurPeope #SouthwarkTogether

British Land backs Southwark’s Living Wage push.   British Land are managing one of our major regeneration schemes in Canada Water. The development includes 3000 new homes a new leisure centre and public spaces.   They’ve recently become a #LivingWageEmployer and mandated that everyone working on the site through their supply chain will be paid the #LondonLivingWage.   The London Living Wage is currently £13.15 per hour, it is the only UK wage rate based on the cost of living and is paid by businesses to their employees on a voluntary basis over and above the statutory minimum wage requirements.   British Land are one of the organisations helping to make Southwark a Living Wage Place by raising awareness of the London Living Wage and increasing the number of accredited Living Wage Employers based in Southwark. Cllr Martin Seaton, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills and Business was recently on site at the Canada Water development’s Plot A1 (to be known as The Founding and Three Deal Porters), where he met with workers to mark Living Wage Week. He said: “I’m delighted that British Land have become a Living Wage Employer and mandated that all people [excluding those learning and earning as apprentices] employed on the Canada Water Masterplan through their supply chain will receive at least the real Living Wage. “Southwark Council has made ambitious commitments to increase the number of employers paying the Living Wage in our Borough and it is great to have British Land support this work. The Living Wage is something I care passionately about, it is good for business, good for employees and good for our local economy.”   You can read the full article at https://lnkd.in/eFfHb958 and for more information about #LivingWage please visit https://lnkd.in/gHixBnN Living Wage Foundation
