About us
In 1972, after watching the BBC drama Cathy Come Home, our founder John Belcher began a small housing association helping homeless families in Sheffield. The organisation grew into South Yorkshire Housing Association, and over fifty years later we are still providing high-quality and affordable homes. Our work is more than housing - we also work with people to settle, live well and flourish in their homes and community by providing employment, wellbeing, and support services and opportunities. We won Landlord of the Year at the 2021 UK Housing Awards.

Homes are fundamental to our wellbeing. Poor housing equals poor health. Earlier this week South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard spoke at the Health and Housing Summit, a cross sector initiative aimed at sparking the conversation and building better ways of doing things between health and housing. Together, with the collaboration of public, private, voluntary, and community sectors, we are working to improve health outcomes for South Yorkshire residents. South Yorkshire Housing Partnership

Stepped out of the rain in Sheffield today to attend the South Yorkshire Health and Housing Summit hosted by South Yorkshire Housing Association. Great to hear the commitment of South Yorkshire's Mayor, Oliver Coppard to this agenda and from Nick Atkin, Greg Fell and Andrew van Doorn OBE. This is such an important topic. Discussions with decision makers ranged from damp and mould, data, funding, community organising, the private rented sector and trust. As Oliver Coppard put it, ‘nothing gets fixed in a day but today marks the start’. Here's to working together to make South Yorkshire the healthiest region in the United Kingdom with the basic human right of good housing at the heart.

Our Changing Futures team hosted our first recovery event last week, in celebration of Recovery Month. It was led by the brilliant Changing Futures team, and our attendees enjoyed finding out more about the fantastic work our partner organisations are doing and how they are supporting people on their recovery journey in Sheffield. We also listened to amazing people who kindly shared their recovery journey with us. As part of the event we launched the powerful ‘Don’t Turn Your Back On’ campaign, led by our brilliant Changing Futures associate Rita, which focuses on breaking down the stigma around multiple disadvantages and highlighting the importance of being there for people in need - including being kind to yourself. During the afternoon there was an exclusive space open to women in recovery from addiction or multiple disadvantage, who enjoyed relaxing facials and space for meditation. Thank you so much to everyone who attended the event, to our fantastic speakers from Framework Charity and Project 6 and to The Art House for providing a delicious lunch. 😍 🤩 #RecoveryMonth #coproduction #livedexperience
