Today is both #WorldMentalHealthDay as well as #WorldHomelessDay, two subjects that are closely intertwined. I recently spotted IKEA and Shelter's “Unwelcome Home” collaboration in their Wembley Store. They’ve converted the usual IKEA dolls house into a representation of what many families are facing with so-called temporary accommodation. It helps us pause for a moment to reflect on the crowded rooms, dangerous and depressing housing conditions so many families face across the UK in 2024. Key takeaways: * The term #Homeless doesn’t just apply to people you see rough sleeping on the streets. It’s includes anyone who doesn’t have a fixed place to call home. * 1 in 78 children in the UK are homeless and live in ‘temporary accommodation’ * It’s not that temporary. 47% of families have been there for more than two years. Shelter is calling on the government to commit to building 90,000 social homes a year for 10 years and needs our support.
