Exciting news! Join us at our Manchester studio on 15th August for the launch of Spolia, a revolutionary terrazzo made in Manchester from bespoke demolition waste.     Located in Swinton, the factory has been manufacturing terrazzo since the 1930s, connecting us to Manchester's rich industrial heritage and supporting local workers.      During the launch event, you'll have the unique opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind terrazzo tile using demolition waste. Your collaborative creation will be taken to our Swinton factory for pressing, curing, and polishing, before being returned to the Solus studio for you to enjoy.      Food, drinks, music, and the opportunity to network with some interesting people in a beautiful space. What’s not to like?     RSVP now to secure your spot!  https://lnkd.in/eH6fkuwj

Ad | UK-based ceramics supplier Solus Ceramics has created a range of bespoke terrazzo tiles made from waste materials from project sites. The range is called Spolia and utilises waste aggregates from demolition sites across the UK to create terrazzo tiles and countertops. The initiative allows designers to incorporate waste materials from their own project sites into site-specific terrazzo tiles and surfaces, reusing local materials in new designs.

We launched Spolia last night! Solus' Sam Frith unveiled this innovative terrazzo, upcycling demolition waste into bespoke tiles. Quiligotti's Daniel Riley shared their unique history as the UK's last commercial terrazzo maker. We watched a short film about Finsbury Dials, "The Building that Built a Building”, featuring Spolia. Together, we crafted a one-of-a-kind countertop filled with a treasure trove of site debris, samples, and found objects. And we topped off the night with negronis at the beautiful J. Adams & Co.'s showroom across the road, admiring the terrazzo in its new home. Explore Spolia here: https://lnkd.in/eEKgE4N6

Introducing Spolia, a groundbreaking terrazzo range made in the UK that is revolutionising the construction industry’s approach to waste. In addition to a range of standard colours, a bespoke service allows you to incorporate waste materials from project sites into one-of-a-kind terrazzo creations, creating a narrative of reuse and revitalisation. The result is a product that is entirely unique to that building, with each speck within the tile telling a story of the history and materiality of the site. A fantastic day in the sun for our annual Solus 'Summer Trilby' golf day! Last Thursday, the clouds miraculously departed as we welcomed over 90 architects, developers, contractors, and suppliers, to the prestigious London Golf Club in Kent. And, as ever, it did not disappoint. A special thanks to our sponsors Mapei, Schluter Systems, FILA Solutions, Alberti e Santi, Buzon UK Ltd, and Aquacut Ltd for their support, and to the entire Solus team for their hard work in delivering another great event! See you at the next one...

Jonathan Schofield is a man about town – quite literally! He took us and some valued clients on a walking tour of the architectural highlights of Manchester last week, which included our own building, the old Manchester Law Library on Kennedy Street.   We were intrigued to learn about the Manchester origins of Rolls Royce, a client we've been proud to serve since 1996. Engineer and car designer Henry Royce met car dealer Charles Rolls at the Midland Hotel in Manchester in 1904. Solus supplies ceramics to Rolls Royce showrooms worldwide, contributing to the presentation of their prestigious brand and vehicles.   Our guide tailored his talk to our love for ceramics, explaining that in the smoky smoggy Manchester of yesteryear, tiled exteriors were easier to clean (plus ça change!). After tramping through St Peters Square, admiring St George’s House and other magnificent buildings, we finished at Peveril of the Peak, a pub clad entirely in beautiful ceramics – a tile nerds dream!

That's a wrap on Build The Way C.I.C 2023/24! Last Thursday, Solus was proud to host Build the Way's Final Showcase at our Clerkenwell showroom. And what an inspiring night it was! Build the Way is a nine-month, paid architecture traineeship that we're thrilled to sponsor. It provides young people from all backgrounds with an accessible route into a career in architecture, with hands-on experience and a London Living Wage. The final exhibition, curated, designed and built by the three trainees, showcased nine months of hard work, dedication, and creativity. We were all blown away by what they had achieved in that time! Our Head of People, Holly Oag, introduced the evening, explaining why supporting Build the Way aligns with our strategy of people, product and planet. Charles Bettes of GPAD and Andrew Whiting of HUT Architecture, Build the Way Directors, shared exciting plans for the programme's future. We're delighted to renew our commitment to Build the Way for another year. Seeing the positive impact on these young professionals reaffirms our belief in investing in talent and creating opportunities for growth. We can't wait to see the amazing things they achieve! Are you interested in applying for Build The Way 2024/25? Applications are now open! https://lnkd.in/dK7D7Thj Huge congrats to everyone who helped make this happen: HUT Architecture, GPAD, Morrow Lorraine, shedkm, POoR Collective, The London School of Architecture.

1 New Park Square is a significant milestone in Parabola’s eco-conscious development of Edinburgh Park, carefully designed to create a new sustainable urban quarter, creative campus, and cultural destination. Designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, 1 New Park Square is the flagship of the development, offering 87,500 sqft of office space, with conference and events spaces and a restaurant that leads out onto a square. The project was the Outright Winner of The Concrete Society Awards 2023, and also the Architects’ Journal Workplace Project 2023. The use of concrete was supported by a sustainability review using the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers Technical Memorandum 52 (CIBSE TM52), on how to avoid overheating when designing a building.
