“I believe that my experience of where I grew up and my life and my friends’ lives helped me when I was working on propositions; I believe that investment committees have to be the same… We will make better decisions if we have people with a broader range of experience.” In the latest episode of ‘Investment Committees of The Future: in conversation’ our friends at Good Finance UK are joined by Matt Smith, Chief Executive of Key Fund, who cites that a diverse range of perspectives and expertise are the key factors that lead to better decisions being made by investment committees. We had a fantastic time attending the Labour Party Conference last week! It was a great opportunity to engage with key leaders and creatives to discuss the future of the digital and creative sectors. 💡✨ We welcomed two brilliant events to the Creative Campus from Social Enterprise UK, Future Economy Alliance and Power to Change Our own CEO Lynn Haime joined the morning panel at Social Enterprise UK's breakfast event to discuss how social enterprises can help tackle inequality in Britain. Chaired by Baroness Glenys Thornton, the panel also featured: Peter Holbrook CBE (Social Enterprise UK) Erika Rushton (Kindred LCR) Patricia Hamzahee FRSA (Black Funding Network). They had a great discussion about social enterprise in Liverpool and its role in addressing inequality across economic, geographical, gender, and racial lines. 💬⚖️ In the afternoon, the Power to Change event featured: Tim Davies-Pugh (Power to Change) Erika Rushton (Kindred LCR) Sally-Anne Watkiss (Homebaked Bakery) Alex Norris (Minister for Democracy and Local Growth) Liam Kelly (Make CIC). They talked about their projects and the challenges they face, particularly around funding and buying property for community-led regeneration. Thanks to everyone who joined us for these important conversations on regeneration and the actions we can take to make a real difference! 👏

There’s a growing awareness that the children in social care sector is in trouble, and Social adVentures seeks to provide the radical change required to improve the life chances of our most vulnerable young people. They used social investment to purchase, open and run their first purpose-led residential children’s home in Salford, Greater Manchester. “The investment from SASC has enabled us to accelerate our entry into this market and we have now opened our first children’s home. We have ambitious plans for the future and are excited about providing positive outcomes for young people.” Read the full Good Finance UK case study - link in the comments.

While infrastructure projects aim to serve the needs of the nation, they often have profound impacts on local communities, which can hinder growth and opportunities. So how do we overcome these challenges to ensure economic, environmental and social benefits are equitably distributed across society? Sarah Rial FICRS from our #SocialValue2032 programme partner Jacobs is the lead author on a new report exploring how #SocialValue techniques can benefit major projects and the people they serve. NEW: Labour and the impact economy: ‘they get it’. Now what? This week's Editor's Post by Laura Joffre: Walking away from Albert Dock next to Liverpool’s exhibition centre after a day of meetings and events with social entrepreneurs and investors during the #LabourPartyConference on Tuesday, it was hard to form one single conclusion from the dozens of conversations I’d had, given how divergent people’s opinions of the new government were. But there was one thing they all agreed on: the new government “gets it”. After years of disinterest from the most recent Conservative governments, everyone seemed to be relieved to see lawmakers actually demonstrate that they know what social enterprise and social investment are. I’ve heard a lot of hope that social enterprise and social investment could be taken to a more “central” government department, recognising them as powerful economic actors and not just a “nice to have” on the margins. They currently sit (with charities, youth, and also sport) in the portfolio of civil society minister Stephanie Peacock. Responsibility for the social economy is unlikely to be removed entirely from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, but several people have heard about plans for cross-department cooperation. There are "live discussions" taking place about a partnership that would involve the Treasury, the Cabinet Office and DCMS, someone with close knowledge of the matter told me. That does not mean that it will happen, but given the many crises the UK government is dealing with at the moment, the sole fact that officials are taking the time to have those discussions shows that they’re taking the sector seriously, the same person said. But not everyone is entirely convinced, with little tangible evidence of this support beyond a few speeches. “I’m optimistic but I need a plan,” said a senior manager at a social investment firm. Social entrepreneurs on the ground are frustrated at the lack of detail on policy – many appear sceptical – if not downright critical. “A lot of the rhetoric aligns, but I do not think ministers recognise social enterprise as a driving force for that change,” I heard. After much prodding, a minister privately admitted that they were aware that the government wasn’t doing enough, and that they “got the message”. Will we see the transformational shift many are hoping for? Read the full editorial here: https://lnkd.in/ejxyBSKm Many thanks to Social Enterprise UK, Power to Change, Better Society Capital, Access - The Foundation for Social Investment, School for Social Entrepreneurs, Pathway Fund, Social Investment Business and others for welcoming me to their gatherings and events throughout the conference.
