Really enjoyed speaking with Emma Crosby on Sky News this morning about pet care, the cost of living crisis, and Snoots. Thanks for having us! Thanks David Cotgreave and the Hound team for making it happen!

It's been 3 days since I've posted a Snoots hiring update. It is my immense pleasure to welcome Lara Magnus-Moore as our first Head of Product and Marlo our Chief Golden Retrieving Officer! When I first met Lara she said "I'm not looking for a job, but I might be able to connect you to some relevant people depending on who you're looking for." Turns out Lara was who we were looking for. A passion for pets, a founder's ambition, a true product leader's vision. All boxes ticked. As a product-first founder myself, it's bittersweet to hand off the reins of something I have been molding for the past 19 months, but I couldn't imagine a better pair of hands to take over (working alongside Amanda Hosek and Rachel Harris and the whole clinical team). A special thank you to Alicia, Andrew, and Kareem who've been supports over the last year in helping me think about product and building a product team.

Another article, saying much of the same things, but yet another one that's not calling out the great startups in the US that are working to make pet care more affordable by focusing on tele-health and at-home (Otis Pet, BrilliantPad, MySimplePetLab), making clinics more efficient (Digitail and Mascotte | Client & Operations Support for Vets), creating whole new categories (Loyal, Mella Pet Care, MedcoVet) and helping when petcare becomes impossible (BestyBnB) among so many others (ahem... like Snoots coming at you soon America). Affordability is a very real problem and we're building Snoots precisely for the people mentioned in this piece. I take every single story personally. But all is not lost. The future is bright. We need to trust our innovators in this category to bring affordability and new technologies to the pet space. The fact that pet-care has become "big business" means startups and investors are motivated to create new and innovative solutions and solve this problem.

A great chance to join us on our mission to bring affordability back to pet care.
Snoots is growing!! We are looking for a highly entrepreneurial product lead who loves dogs or cats more than humans (but also loves humans). Send your best recommendations my way. As we continue on our mission at Snoots to make petcare affordable, we welcome the fact that the UK gov has recognized that our industry is deeply flawed and that our customers are truly struggling to get the care they need. However, I worry that this type of investigation will lead to wishy washy measures that large corporates will be able to skirt and just make it harder for independent vets to do their jobs and earn a living. There is no doubt that some in our industry are taking advantage of the outsized increase in demand to increase profits, but I can say with certainty that those funds do not flow to independent vets or to the vets who work so hard to take care of our fluff balls. The problem remains the same: An increase in the number of pets with a stagnant or decreasing pool of vets driven by unreasonable working conditions and the ridiculous expectations we place on our vets (and definitely not helped by Brexit 🇬🇧🇪🇺). The only path forward is innovation, fair and open competition and creativity, not regulation. If you are interested in joining us on our mission to use technology to make petcare affordable, we are hiring vets, nurses, product teams, engineers, and growth marketers. Reach out!

Super excited that Snoots was selected in the top 100 (out of 2000 ) startups by Focal! And I counted, we're one of only 18 consumer companies in the batch. Look out for us on the list at https://lnkd.in/eK5KXYMX Nothing without our amazing team: Amanda, Rachel, Max, Dr. Urte, Adrian, Jordan

A remarkably nuanced article in the The Atlantic picking up some important points: 1. Prices are absolutely rising to a point that will make pets a luxury item in the near future. Saying that is not vet bashing, it's recognizing where our consumers are. 2. The vets are almost never to blame for this, they are just doing their jobs and want to be focused on delivering care. 3. Much, but not all of it, comes from P.E. taking aggressive stances both on pricing and on up-selling which is wrong, but unlikely to be regulated anytime soon. 4. Some of it is absolutely related to consumer expectations being higher (if you want more care, it will cost more). If we want to do something about it, the solution is to innovate our way forward, not to just yearn for a time that won't come back. The author, Helaine Olen rightfully draws comparisons to our human healthcare sector, but the vet industry has seen 1/1000th the innovation. Snoots is a small part towards solving for this problem at the primary care level, but there are plenty of other startups along the veterinary stack doing great things - and I'd love to see more coverage of our solutions rather than writing over and over and over about a problem we very much know. https://lnkd.in/eYepyjwk

We do our best every day to fix this industry. Reviews like this make it all worthwhile.
I don't spend too much time thinking about what the CMA will or won't do about vet pricing in the UK - what I do care about is the amazing work Snoots' team is doing actually making a difference in our industry. Special shout out to our amazing head vet Rachel Harris who is genuinely a superstar.
