The continued growth in demand for new vans is encouraging given this sector is a barometer of the health of Britain’s businesses. Industry has invested huge sums delivering cutting-edge technology, including zero emission vehicles, but low demand raises serious doubt over the ability of the UK to achieve its ambitious green targets. There must be an urgent review of the market, regulation and support in place, else the cost will soon be felt in reduced UK investment, economic growth, jobs and decarbonisation. https://lnkd.in/ef3TM8ww

New van market hits three year high but EVs need boost - Demand for new light commercial vehicles rises by 2.4%, delivering best October performance in three years. - Growth attributable to small and medium vans, but future of new pickup market at serious risk. - Plug-in Van Grant extension welcome but further and more holistic support needed, as electric van uptake remains -1.9% down in 2024. https://lnkd.in/eyN_srbv

🔋UK new car buyers now have more than 125 different BEV models to choose from – an uplift of 38% over the last 10 months While it remains the case that the average BEV has a higher upfront cost than an ICE equivalent, widening choice and huge manufacturer discounting mean that around one in five BEV models now has a lower purchase price than the average petrol or diesel car, especially for buyers able to take advantage of schemes such as salary sacrifice https://lnkd.in/eG_m4UGX

Massive manufacturer investment in model choice and market support is helping make the UK the second largest EV market in Europe. That transition, however, must not perversely slow down the reduction of carbon emissions from road transport. Fleet renewal across the market remains the quickest way to decarbonise, so diminishing overall uptake is not good news for the economy, for investment or for the environment. EVs already work for many people and businesses, but to shift the entire market at the pace demanded requires significant intervention on incentives, infrastructure and regulation. https://lnkd.in/emCmxkNf

Battery electric the only powertrain to see uptake rise as manufacturers continue to subsidise transition with billions in unsustainable discounting. https://lnkd.in/eG_m4UGX
