How can data centres boost UK economic growth? The latest report from techUK, which we have sponsored, is out today showing the economic impact of data centres on the UK economy. The report – called Foundations for the future: How data centres can boost UK economic growth – shows there is an opportunity to boost the UK economy by increasing its data centre capacity above its recent trend growth rate – from 10% a year to 15% a year. Doing this would see: 💠  £44 billion in additional gross value added (GVA) between 2025-2035 from the construction and operation of data centres 💠40,200 additional jobs directly employed in (often high paying) data centre operational roles 💠 18,200 additional jobs directly employed in data centre construction roles over the period 2025-35 💠 £9.7 billion in additional tax revenue generated by the industry over the period 2025-35 On the pressing issue of the environmental impact of data centre growth, mitigating measures identified include rewarding operators with robust plans for measuring, monitoring and reporting progress on their journey to net zero. Integrating data centres into district heat networks, meanwhile, is another measure outlined in the report. Our real estate team has advised Sovereign Centros from CBRE on securing two new major lettings at Festival Place, a 1.1m sq ft retail centre located in Basingstoke.   The latest deals involve Superbowl UK taking a 16,750 sq ft unit at the centre, while Hans Buffet will open a 10,000 sq ft restaurant. The lettings form part of our ongoing support for Sovereign Centros in executing its asset management strategy for Festival Place and assisting in strengthening of the centre’s portfolio of brands.
