About us

Sheppard Robson is an ever-evolving collective of architects, interior designers and masterplanners. Together our team of 370 people design buildings, spaces and places that are people-centred and precision-made. Our family includes our interior design specialists ID:SR and AXIS, which applies our detailed design expertise to major projects by others. From our offices in London, Manchester and Glasgow, we work on a scale, and with a legacy of expertise, that means we can engage with society’s most pressing challenges. The most urgent of these is the need to achieve a better balance between humans and nature on our planet of limited resources. With no single solution, the mitigation of climate change can only be achieved with the critical application of an inventive, multi-layered approach, and by fundamentally rethinking how we live, learn, work and play. Our work is the result of creative, technical and intellectual exchange. People-centred design comes out of an engagement process where architects enable, listen and interpret as well as lead. With a robust methodology for testing ideas, we are able to fine-tune them without losing their pioneering spirit. Every project we make presents the opportunity to push our learning a little further, but we never forget that innovation should always be in the service of a clear purpose – to design for life.

Delighted to see UCL Marshgate win Building Magazine Project of the Year at last night’s Building Awards, with judges complementing the way the building “integrates [with the] community and provides a dynamic, collaborative environment for UCL staff and students”. Alongside Stanton Williams and Mace, we were part of the team in the making of Marshgate – both as joint interior architect and technical designer. Our specialist graphics team was also part of the collaboration, creating a clear and legible wayfinding system that sits comfortably within the architectural language of the building. Our recent 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 panel discussion explored what the built environment needs to do today to ensure we design cities that are more resilient and equitable for the future. The conversation brought together a diverse range of voices, offering perspectives ranging from government policy and behaviour change to engineering and architecture. Use the link below to read a summary of the discussion, which spanned topics such as planning-process reform, the risks of delaying action in the hopes of the “perfect badge”, the need to reduce the friction to change, and working with a multiplicity of tools while recognising that climate change is complex but doesn’t need to be complicated. https://lnkd.in/eMxuBkCw A big thank you to our speakers: Amy Frearson, Journalist (Chair) Joanna Yarrow, Chief Impact Officer, Human Nature Sarah Allan, Head of Architecture, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Helena Rivers, Net Zero Lead, Buildings Places EURI, AECOM Lee Bennett, Partner, Sheppard Robson #routetonetzero #paneldiscussion

Thrilled to see the plans to bring the wonder back to Earls Court in the Architects’ Journal, with more information about the vision for London’s largest cleared development site at the link below. We are the lead architect for the Hammersmith & Fulham part of phase 1. This includes the 42-storey residential building designed by Sheppard Robson and Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) and affordable housing schemes designed by Serie Architects and dRMM, respectively. Our building is the tallest within the masterplan, a landmark for the site and West London. Comprising 278 homes, the building’s petal-shaped plan creates 100% habitable dual aspect for all homes regardless of size and orientation. The organic-inspired plan results in a vertically articulated form, contributing towards a strong sense of slenderness and symmetry when addressing the immediate and long-distance context. The Cascading Waterfall concept also informs the building’s expression. The reference to water is created through glazed bays and reflective metal tubes, giving the building an iridescent quality in different light conditions and can be lit at night to further emphasise its reflective properties. At the top of the building, this concept helps create a new beacon for the west London skyline, flowing down to the base of the building and animating the generous residential entrance from Empress Place Boulevard. https://lnkd.in/exfGmuVM The Earls Court Development Company Studio Egret West Hawkins\Brown Serie Architects dRMM SLA Haworth Tompkins Maccreanor Lavington Hoare Lea ACME ZCD ARCHITECTS LTD #earlscourt #residentialdesign #publicrealm #masterplanning

Working on behalf of Whitbread Property, our design vision for the Premier Inn Norwich Nelson city centre site transforms a key gateway near the train station. The planning application includes detailed plans for a new 248-bedroom Premier Inn hotel on the corner of Prince of Wales Road. Replacing the existing Premier Inn on the site, the new, larger hotel will serve as a visual anchor facing the station and be positioned to frame key views towards Norwich Castle and St Faith’s House. Also proposed are 491 rooms of purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) across two buildings and outline permission for new homes in a later phase. Core to the development is a sequence of enhanced green public spaces, including a new central public square. Site permeability has been improved through the careful positioning of buildings, while access to the riverside path along the River Wensum has been upgraded to strengthen links to Norwich’s wider urban landscape. The hotel restaurant along the river’s edge will create an inviting destination for local residents and visitors alike. We will share more on the project shortly. Last month, we hosted our 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞/𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥 panel discussion, which brought together experts across science to discuss the blurring line between office and labs. You can now read a summary of the conversation on our website (link below) which touches on the key takeaways such as the apparent shift from “grey labs with just small portholes for light” towards spaces that embrace the benefits of the wider workplace wellness revolution; as well as the importance of balancing the cultural advantages of “science on show” with the need to tread carefully when making the lab more permeable. https://lnkd.in/gd7bvnyv Thanks again to the panel that contributed to the discussion: Clare Dowdy, Journalist (Chair) Alison Wring, AECOM, Director Commercial Science/ Tech Lead Eugene Sayers, Sheppard Robson, Partner Gavin Lewis, Haleon, New Campus Design & Implementation Lead Liam Nicholls, Creative Places, Partner #workplacedesign #designingfortheknowledgeeconomy #collaboration #paneldiscussion

Teaching and learning building at the University of Southampton gets the go-ahead! Our designs for a civic-minded new facility will transform a car park into a new campus destination where bold design ideas are grounded within a new landscape for students, staff and the community to enjoy. Commenting on the news, Sheppard Robson partner, Eugene Sayers, said: “The North East Quadrant project needed to have a magnetic quality, drawing students from the centre of the campus with buildings, spaces and places that signal the arrival of a game-changing facility for the University. “We wanted to create a landscape and building that are rooted in their surroundings and have a distinctive character to match the boldness of the 1960s campus. The variety of spaces created will allow people to use the buildings and landscapes in a multitude of ways and make them their own.”   Read more about the scheme on Building Design.: https://lnkd.in/eR7PYeEN   First visualisation by Hayes Davidson. #universitydesign #southampton #educationdesign #studenthub

What a (Green) Week! 🌿🌳 This was our tenth year of establishing a week of events to bring us together and put sustainability front and centre.   This year's theme was Urgency in Action, and we learnt so much in a week packed with events, including talks on intersectionality and the fundamental inequalities related to the climate crisis globally and in the UK; we heard about the role finance can play in driving this change and how we as designers can use our agency to support this; we reconnected with biophilia, toured exemplar buildings and projects, raised money for charities, and watched thought-provoking films. We also found time to have light-hearted moments playing games and connecting with our colleagues!   We welcomed people into our London studio for our Accelerating Action panel discussion which focused on actions we can be taking now, next steps needed to accelerate these and some inspiring examples.   A huge thank you to our sustainability group for leading this and to everyone who helped make it a success.   Viritopia for bringing connection to nature into our offices Amy Frearson Joanna Yarrow Helena Rivers Sarah Allan Gwilym Still Patricia Steven Kudzai Matsvai Kell Jones Caroline Dowsett

The first details of our ongoing designs for 2-4 Whitworth Street West in Manchester have just been released. As Sheppard Robson partner Tony O'Brien comments in Place North West, the proposals “open up the site to create a new piece of public realm at the heart of the development, helping animate the streetscape and enhance connections from the city back to Knott Mill and First Street.” https://lnkd.in/eSdsBPT2
