Our time at The Open as the official beer supplier is now at an end for another year after the championship finished on Sunday – and what a time we had! Guests were able to enjoy Singha, the original Thai lager, which we have been brewing for the UK market in 2022, along with Whitstable Bay Pale Ale and Orchard View cider on draught. It must’ve been thirsty work watching the golf, because more than 200,000 pints were enjoyed during the course of the event! It was the fourth year of our partnership with The Open, with our beer and cider on sale at bars around the course. Our Chief Executive Jonathan Neame also popped up to Royal Troon to support the team – and enjoy a pint or two! A big thank you to all the team members who helped make our involvement possible. #brewer #brewing #beer #partnerships #theopen #theopengolf

We were pleased recently to celebrate our Chef Apprentice Lewis Weygang's nomination for Apprentice of the Year at the Craft Guild of Chefs awards at The Marriot Hotel in London. It was a black-tie affair to celebrate the very best in the industry, and celebrity Chef James Martin and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, were presenting the awards. In support of Lewis, Apprenticeship Lead David Everett, Executive Chef Ellina Smith, Head Chef Paul Potter, and the trainers from our training partner, HIT, who have supported Lewis's journey, were invited to join him on his table. David Everett said: "Although Lewis did not win, I consider his nomination a victory for work-based apprenticeship learning. It was great to see traditionalists like the CGOC recognizing work-based learning and to have Shepherd Neame on the big screen. "We are all very proud of what apprenticeships can do for individuals, and Lewis is a prime example of this." #brewer #brewery #pubs #hospitality #apprenticeships #celebrate

When our new licensees Greg Coleman and Carla Marsh took on The Juggs in Lewes, they had to hit the ground running as locals and visitors were queuing up to get back into the picturesque pub in the South Downs. Fortunately the couple had decades of experience in the hospitality industry behind them. One of the prettiest pubs in Lewes, in a quiet, leafy village lane, today’s passers-by are more likely to be walkers taking in the delights of the Downs than the fishwives carrying their fish baskets – or ‘juggs’ as they used to be called - to the market in Lewes which the pub is named after. Head Chef Greg said: “It’s very unusual in the trade to have somewhere where you get footfall all the time. People walk over the Downs and they’re outside our door. The beauty of it is it’s such a nice place, with such a lot of history.” Carla is now running Front of House with Elsie the border terrier keeping a close eye. They’ve redecorated and upgraded the menu, which now includes The Juggs bhaji smuggler, a vegetarian delight of Bombay mix, pickled red onion and coriander chutney. Pop in and see them soon! #brewery #brewer #brewing #pubs #hospitality #brighton #lewes #partnerships

We have teamed up with Leyton Orient Football Club to create a commemorative limited-edition British lager for their pre-season friendly tomorrow (Saturday) against Hearts of Midlothian. The Os will travel to Edinburgh for the match, which is part of Hearts’ 150th anniversary celebrations. The game has additional significance as it will also commemorate both clubs’ contribution in the First World War. Leyton Orient Football Club, known as Clapton Orient at the time, and Heart of Midlothian formed a close bond during the early period of the Great War when a number of players from each team responded to Lord Kitchener’s call for volunteers to form a New Army. These professional footballers inspired their loyal supporters to do the same, providing a huge boost to recruitment. Players from Hearts and Orient led the way as the first professional footballers to volunteer en-masse for what would known as ‘Pals’ Battalions’, with Hearts joining the 16th Royal Scots - 'McCrae's Battalion', and the Os enlisting into the 17th Middlesex - 'The Footballers' Battalion'. As official provider of beer, cider, wines, spirits and soft drinks at Leyton Orient Football Club's Gaughan Group Stadium in East London, we worked with them to mark the occasion by creating a limited-edition British lager. The bottle design – voted for by the fans – pays homage to the kit that Clapton Orient wore at the time of the War, as well as those players who took up arms, with the front label featuring an of the squad, and the neck showcasing the names of the players who volunteered. Our Brands Marketing Manager Rose Davis said: “We were delighted to work with Leyton Orient on the creation of this commemorative lager. Just 240 bottles have been produced, and we hope supporters from Leyton Orient and Hearts alike will enjoy this very special British beer.” Read more here: https://snea.me/LOFC24 🍻 ⚽ #beer #brewing #community #brewery

Last week two Shepherd Neame pubs hosted our second year of Shakespeare with Sheps, bringing live theatre to pub gardens with the Changeling Theatre. The Kent-based company performed Shakespeare's Henry V at the New Flying Horse in the beautiful rural setting of Wye, and at the Royal Albion Hotel in Broadstairs, overlooking the beach, with more than 120 people attending the events. On Tuesday, July 2, The New Flying Horse in Wye hosted the play and despite some drizzle, the audience were able to enjoy an evening of al fresco theatre in the pub's spacious garden, enjoy a special menu for the night – and make use of the new outside bar. On Wednesday, July 3, it was the turn of a sell-out show at the Royal Albion Hotel, where conditions stayed dry and customers were able to take in the coastal view as part of the scenery. Though the slightly dreary summer 2024 did its best, it wasn't able to spoil another successful partnership! #brewer #brewery #pubs #hospitality #partnerships

A couple whose family have been running a Kent village pub for more than 60 years have been honoured for their efforts. Sarah and Jeff Pemble took on The Pepperbox Inn in Ulcombe near Maidstone, in 1984 – from Sarah’s father, Jack Wood, who ran it with her mother Betty from 1958. Originally named The Horseshoes, Jack decided to officially give it the name it was known by by locals when he took it on in the 50s. The name refers to a heavy handgun which still sits behind the bar today. Sarah moved in to the pub with her parents and sisters at the age of four, and she and husband Jeff took it on when their children were very young when her dad retired. Their daughter Sophie now runs it – officially taking the tenancy on in her own name earlier this year, after Sarah and Jeff moved to France to retire. Sarah said: “I was one of five children – how on earth my mother and father did this with five girls, I can’t imagine. I have lots of good memories. I was always in the kitchen and did a lot of the cheffing. My mother started the food tradition here and it has always been known for its food.” The couple were presented with a Lifetime Contribution award by Shepherd Neame Chief Executive Jonathan Neame and Property Services Adviser George Barnes, on Friday, June 28, as they had been unable to attend our Pub Awards in May. Sarah said: “We are enjoying the quiet life now. We watch Sophie and think we don’t have the energy for it any more!” Congratulations and a happy retirement to Sarah and Jeff! #brewery #brewing #brewer #pubs #hospitality #longservice #family #generations

We are delighted to unveil our first New World XPA (5.1% ABV). The limited edition XPA - Extra Pale Ale – is a hazy, full-bodied golden beer. It is a New World-style XPA as it uses Cascade, Centennial, Citra, and Nugget hops from the US, which provide the beer with bold citrus and tropical flavours, along with a touch of spice. These are combined with UK-sourced malts and water drawn from the artesian well underneath our historic Faversham Brewery. It is the third in our new Small Batch range of limited edition, craft keg beers, created on a 15 barrel kit installed in the heart of the brewery. The first brew was First Drop Session IPA (4.3% ABV), released in October, which has now been incorporated as a permanent addition to our portfolio, and Unfiltered Pilsner (4.4% ABV), unveiled in April. Director of Brewing Mike Unsworth said: “Our team are really enjoying being able to experiment with new styles and flavours in the new Small Batch brewery. We are incredibly proud of our latest creation, New World XPA, a punchy pale ale crafted to appeal to drinkers who enjoy a hop-forward pint." Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eVegV7da 🍻

We are proud to announce that Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) is our new Charity of the Year for 2024/25. KSS is the local air ambulance charity for Kent, Surrey and Sussex. When there’s a life-or-death call, they bring specialised doctors, paramedics and treatment to the scene, fast. It is our fifth Charity of the Year partnership following the relaunch of our Sheps Giving charitable arm in 2018. Our Sheps Giving Committee will be working closely with KSS to organise fundraising and promotional activities at the Faversham Brewery and across our 300-strong pub and hotel estate throughout the next 12 months. These include a pledge to donate 50p from every Kids' Meal Deal sold on our Menu for Minis to KSS. Working with the charity Pennies, the digital charity box, we will also be inviting customers at selected pubs to make a 25 pence donation when they spend over £25 by card. Every penny given goes to charity: 90% to KSS and 10% to Pennies. Jonathan Neame said “When choosing our new Charity of the Year partner for 2024/25, we wanted to work with an organisation that really makes a difference to the communities we serve, and KSS does just that. “When I recently visited their Redhill site to meet Chief Executive David W. and his team, I was incredibly impressed by their passion, skill and dedication. Every pound that Shepherd Neame donates to this fantastic charity will literally help their team to save more lives, so we will be doing everything we can to raise as much money for them as possible. We are really looking forward to working with KSS during the coming year.” David W., Chief Executive of KSS, said: “We are delighted and extremely proud to be partnering with Shepherd Neame, a highly successful, locally based business that shares in our values and proudly supports the communities we both serve. We’re looking forward to working closely together to raise vital awareness and funds for our lifesaving work, as well as helping to equip and train Shepherd Neame employees and customers with skills such as CPR so that together we can save even more lives. “It costs over £51K per day to operate our lifesaving service, and as a charity we can only keep flying and saving lives thanks to the generosity of people right across Kent, Surrey and Sussex. We are incredibly grateful to Shepherd Neame for supporting KSS and we’re looking forward to working with everyone at the company and its customers over the coming year.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/exvKZwts #brewery #brewing #pubs #partnerships #charity #community #hospitalitynews

We are delighted to let you know that Shepherd Neame has raised £30,000 for its Charity of the Year, FareShare UK. FareShare is the UK’s biggest charity tackling the environmental problem of food waste for social good. It works with the food industry to get good to eat food, that might otherwise go to waste, to a network of over 8,000 charities and community groups across the UK. Shepherd Neame launched its partnership with FareShare in July last year, and fundraising activities by team members at the brewery and across its pub estate have included taking part in the Peak District Ultra Challenge in Dorset, a Brewery Bake Off competition, photography competitions, raffles and quizzes, as well as also spending a day volunteering. Shepherd Neame pledged to donate 50p for every Kids’ Meal Deal sold on its new Menu for Minis, which went live in August 2023, to the charity. It also continues to partner with Pennies, where customers drinking and dining at selected pubs are invited to make a 25 pence donation when they spend over £25 and pay on a card via Chip & Pin. Every penny given goes to charity: 90% to FareShare and 10% to Pennies. Shepherd Neame Chief Executive Jonathan Neame said: “When we were choosing our charity partner last summer, we wanted to work with an organisation which made a real difference to families and individuals in need, and FareShare does just that. Their ethos also fits with our ongoing efforts throughout the business to limit waste and recycle wherever possible, in line with our pledge to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2025.
