About us

Sheffield Museums Trust is the independent charity that operates six of the city’s leading museums and heritage sites: Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Graves Gallery, Kelham Island Museum, Millennium Gallery, Shepherd Wheel and Weston Park Museum. Established in 2021, the charity cares for the city’s collections of art, human and industrial history, and natural science, alongside the Guild of St George’s John Ruskin collection and is home to the Ken Hawley Collection Trust’s Hawley Tool Collection. We work with our communities to tell the remarkable story of Sheffield and its people, and celebrate its reputation for excellence in craft, making and innovation. Together with local, regional and national partners, we showcase home-grown creative talent and bring outstanding cultural experiences to the city.

Our latest exhibition, acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood is open now at the Millennium Gallery 🙌 This touring exhibition by the Hayward Gallery and curated by Hettie Judah approaches motherhood as a creative enterprise, one at times tempered by ambivalence, exhaustion or grief. Addressing diverse experiences of motherhood, the displays span themes of creation, caregiving and loss. The heart of the exhibition is a series of revelatory self-portraits – a celebration of the artist as mother. Entry to the exhibition is free – if you’re able, please donate and help keep your museums free and open for everyone to enjoy. Guidance for visitors: Artworks in this exhibition address important issues surrounding women’s health and wellbeing, including nudity, childbirth, (in)fertility, miscarriage, abortion, loss, domestic abuse, adoption, sterilisation and obstetric violence. 🔗 Visit our website to find out more: https://lnkd.in/dtkFX_CU

We're marking #WorldSuicidePreventionDay with Mike McCarthy from Sheffield who lost his son, Ross, to suicide. He co-founded a movement called Baton of Hope UK, to honour Ross, with the aim of preventing suicide. Mike explains how suicide can affect every one of us. And by raising awareness, reducing the stigma & encouraging action we can help to reduce the instances of suicide around the world. The Baton of Hope returns to display on Friday, alongside the Yorkshire Speak Their Name memorial quilt, in The Ruskin Collection: Hand, Head and Heart at The Millennium Gallery. They're two objects that remind us that every chat, no matter how small, builds a more supportive and understanding society. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e2iGkY9M

🥁 Wonderful opportunity 🥁 We’re looking to recruit Cultural Advisors to work with us to develop the themes and displays in the forthcoming, major, new exhibition about colour, opening at the Millennium Gallery in 2025! ✨ Spanning art, science, archaeology, social history and more, the exhibition will look at people’s use and understanding of colour and the role it plays in the natural world. An important part of the exhibition will be celebrating how colour is entwined in the rich cultural heritage of local communities. To help shape these stories in the exhibition, we're looking for Cultural Advisors who will join a panel to develop the themes and displays together with us 👊 The role doesn’t require any specialist qualifications or museum experience – you just need to be willing to share your knowledge of the role of colour in your community and be happy to contribute to relaxed, friendly discussions with your fellow Advisors and panel ✔ 🔗Find out more and apply here: https://lnkd.in/eYXzxE3f #artjobs #museumjobs #sheffieldjobs
