  • Our world-leading diabetes experts have launched a groundbreaking trial aiming to reverse the lifetime risks of nerve damage in people living with #type2diabetes The brand-new trial, known as OCEANIC, will build on recent evidence that shows that intensive management of blood glucose (sugar) levels can prevent the progression of nerve damage in people with type 1 diabetes. The trial will take advantage of smart technologies that help track body fat percentage and glucose levels in real time as well as offer patients a package of intensive lifestyle support to help manage risk factors. It is being funded by an investment from global pharmaceutical company Viatris and consumer electronics company Withings. Around half of people with diabetes suffer with nerve damage (also known as diabetic peripheral neuropathy) caused by high blood glucose levels injuring nerves over time. This can result in loss of sensation (numbness) while also causing severe, disabling nerve pain in the feet and legs. The condition – which is one of the most devastating complications of diabetes – leaves sufferers with the inability to perceive sensation putting them at greater risk of inadvertent injuries, and foot ulcers that can become infected leading to amputations. Professor Solomon Tesfaye, who is leading the trial, said: "Sheffield has world-leading expertise in diabetes research, and through this trial we hope to demonstrate the importance of early identification of diabetes-related nerve damage and how intensive management of risk factors can reverse the terrible consequences of this major complication of diabetes." Diabetes patient Tracey Smythe, 55, of Parsons Cross, whose diabetes-related nerve damage is too advanced to be reversed, said she hoped the new trial can make a difference to others like her in the future. "My quality of life is very poor and very limited, but if it can be diagnosed early and reversed people like me will be able to have the quality of life that I can't." Read more about this important study at: https://lnkd.in/dKZDth-h The study is open to patients aged 18 to 75 identified as having early-stage diabetes-related nerve damage. Contact Dr M. Shaan Goonoo on 0114 2712568 / 07564669525 or email [email protected] if you are interested in taking part. #diabetes #diabeticneuropathy #type2diabetes

  • "Many people that receive transplants go on to achieve amazing things, living full healthy lives." Meet Rachel, who is following in her father's footsteps by entering the British Transplant Games in Nottingham next month after receiving a life-changing kidney transplant. The mum-of-two is now fitter than ever after receiving the donation from ‘perfect match’ sister Emma, 44, in January 2020 at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. Following the successful operation Rachel’s levels returned to normal and she began training to compete as a swimmer, having been inspired by watching Dad Steve win numerous gold medals in the same sport. Rachel suffers from the same genetic kidney disease as Steve, who was gifted a second kidney transplant from his wife, Rachel’s mum, Stella, in 2008. 🏅 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dp64nN8r #LivingDonor #OrganDonation

  • We're proud to have become the first NHS Trust to fly the #RaceEqualityFlag The flag was raised at the Northern General Hospital and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital on 18th July 2024 to mark #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #SAHM2024 and will be raised again on 1st October 2024 to commemorate #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM2024 Chief Executive Kirsten Major said: “I am very proud that we are the first Trust to fly the Race Equality Flag, in recognition of unity amongst the diverse groups working towards racial equality. This was a suggestion from our Race Equality and Inclusion Staff Network who have worked so hard to bring this to fruition. "The flag is a very visible symbol of our commitment to be a brilliant place to work for everyone and we are working hard with colleagues from across our hospitals and community services to understand where we can do more to support all our staff and ensure they have the support and opportunity to reach their full potential. "We want everyone to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all our staff, patients, and visitors and ensure we reflect the diverse communities we serve. "We have made many changes over the past two years including ensuring our recruitment panels are more representative of the diversity of our staff and patients, raising awareness of opportunities for all staff to develop their career but especially those who historically may not have progressed as easily as others and most importantly being clear that there we have zero tolerance towards any racial abuse or discrimination. We know we have not got everything right yet, but we are working hard to be an exemplar employer for equality, diversity and inclusion.” Emergency Department Nurse and Clinical Co-chair of REIN (Race Equality and Inclusion Network) Vytautas Amponsem added: "The Race Equality Flag serves as a powerful symbol to promote awareness and action towards racial equity, and we are pleased that today our Trust has recognised the importance of having a visible sign that we take race equality seriously and want to have an inclusive workplace for all.” #RaceEqualityFlag #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #SAHM2024 #CulturalDiversity #CelebrateHeritage #FreeToBeMe #Diversity

The fantastic Professor Helen Rodd, who works across Sheffield Children's and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust featured on BBC Panorama yesterday talking about her experience caring for children's teeth. Here at Sheffield Children’s, we know that a smile can go a long way and that having healthy teeth is incredibly important for children and young people. Sheffield Children’s is dedicated to highlighting the importance of caring for teeth as part of our commitment to healthier futures for children and young people. We have a number of initiatives that share information and equip families with the tools to improve dental health. Did you spot Professor Helen Rodd, Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry on BBC Panorama yesterday evening? Helen, who has worked in the paediatric dentistry clinic at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital for 32 years with amazing colleagues, was interviewed by the BBC Panorama team for a piece looking at a decline in the health of children. Helen spoke about how the oral health, behavioural and social needs of patients referred to the specialist dental hospital - who are trained to look after patients with complex medical needs - are getting more and more challenging, in terms of both sheer numbers and complexity. Speaking on #Panorama, she recalls the moment she had to extract 18 teeth from a three-year-old child: "I saw a child who was three who was having 18 teeth out - they have 20 baby teeth so they were left with only two. That's an extreme example but it's not an exceptional case. "We see that from time to time. I find it really upsetting that there are children who have such awful teeth. It's going to impact on them now while they are having pain, sleepless nights, not being able to eat, not being able to socialise, missing school, but it's also going to impact on them throughout their life course. That burden of disease goes with you. Children who have decay at a younger age are two to three times more likely to have decay in their adult teeth." The programme also highlighted city-wide efforts to improve children’s oral health in Sheffield. Watch BBC Panorama's Britain’s Child Health Crisis now on https://lnkd.in/d72if9iC

STH was ranked 20th out of the 246 employers who entered – improving our rank of 67th in 2023 and retaining the Gold Award for the third year running. 👏 Congratulations also go to Rachel Salmon, Senior Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Manager, who was also named as one of Stonewall’s 2024 ‘Changemakers’ for her individual efforts to support equality and inclusion in the workplace! Underpinning all that we do are our PROUD values and behaviours which include respect and unity.   “Our LGBTQ Staff network and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team have worked so hard to bring to life the commitments we as an organisation have made to ensure all 19,000 of our colleagues have a positive workplace experience and can be their true selves.   “We have invested our time and energy in education and training from Board to ward level to spread awareness and understanding and I am delighted that this has been recognised with the Gold award.” Rachel added: “I’m proud and humbled to have been chosen as one of Stonewall’s Changemakers this year, for an area of work that I am passionate about and want to make a difference in. Working together with the LGBTQ Network and EDI Team we have started to make changes and be more inclusive for our staff and for our communities, but we know that we still have work to do.   “As a member of the LGBTQ community myself, this award represents the pride I feel personally and I am grateful that I am celebrated for being ‘me’ here at STH. I’ll continue to engage in this work to play a part in creating a society that is truly inclusive for all marginalised groups.”   Colin Macfarlane (He/Him), Director of Programmes and Income at Stonewall (he/him) said: “Implementing inclusive practices and policies is vital for employers who wish to attract and retain top LGBTQ talent. The Workplace Equality Index draws participants from diverse industries and sectors, all of whom understand that inclusivity is the future and are leading the way in this vital change."
