Life. At Severn Trent. Our people are what makes us and caring for our wonderful water is at the heart of what we do.

About us

Water is wonderful. Without it we’d be lost. With it, everything’s possible. For every toothbrush, for every loo flushed. For the hot showers, the cool drinks, the cups of tea. (Because honestly? There’s nothing that can’t be sorted over a nice cup of tea.) But it’s not just at the heart of our homes. It’s at the heart of everything; our schools, our businesses, our hospitals. Saving lives, helping communities thrive. It’s essential, and we simply cannot live without it. We’re Severn Trent, a diverse and amazing group of people who want to keep it that way. We bring you clean water and we take it away safely too. But it’s not just what we do. It’s how we do it: not just talking, but going over and above. Stepping up and rolling our sleeves up. And it’s why we do it: because we care. Not only about our water but our little corner of the country and the community we serve. We care for our amazing colleagues who without them none of this would be possible. We care about making sure they reflect the communities we work in too. At Severn Trent we do more, because we care.

We’re working hard to make a positive difference to the health of rivers and streams in hundreds of places across our region. Here, one of the team, Holly, talks about the work going on at Frankton in Warwickshire. This Submerged Aerated Filter (SAF) will help us to treat water faster during stormy conditions, meaning fewer spills into the River Leam. This is one part of our £450 million investment into restoring river health and reducing the use of storm overflows. To find out more, go to http://ms.spr.ly/6042lkgMm

The great outdoors – it’s called ‘great’ for a reason. Not only are parks and open spaces good for local wildlife and habitats, but they’re also great for our physical and mental well-being. This Love Parks Week, we’re celebrating our green spaces and our work with nature – such as our commitment to plant 1.3m trees across the Midlands which includes our 73 Tiny Forests that we planted alongside Earthwatch Europe. Almost half of these Tiny Forests are on communal land or in parks, such as Walsall Arboretum and Shustoke Reservoir, which means everyone can enjoy them. We’re also committed to planting Legacy Forests across the Midlands, which forms part of our bid to deliver a carbon neutral legacy for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. By creating forests, we’re also helping to leave a legacy for future generations. As our Principal Ecologist Graham Osborn, who leads our award-winning biodiversity team, says, “We may not see all the benefits of what we are doing today, but our children and their children will if we all pull together and do our bit for biodiversity.” So, this Love Parks Week, let us know in the comments how you plan on connecting with green spaces (why not hug a tree) ⬇️

We’re delighted to have been named as industry leaders again for environmental performance by the Environment Agency (EA). For the fifth year running we’ve achieved the highest 4-star status as part of the EA’s Environment Performance Assessment (EPA) - the only company to do so. Having hit green overall across a series of tightening measures - this recognition again reflects our promise to customers that we’re committed to doing right by the environment around us. Liv Garfield, Severn Trent CEO said: “Our customers want to know that we’re getting it right when it comes to caring for the environment, and this recognition again reflects that promise and commitment. While we welcome the tougher measures year on year to drive continued improvements there’s always more to be done, and we’re doing it. “Continued investment, an accelerated spills reduction programme, bold river commitments, and an ambition to net zero is just some of what helps demonstrate to our customers that we’re moving further and faster than anyone else when it comes to doing right by the environment.” Read more here: http://ms.spr.ly/6049lVmc7

It’s #YouthEmploymentWeek, and providing meaningful work experience, and the chance to learn new skills - helps to inspire and motivate young people into the world of work. Alongside placements, apprenticeships, internships and the job opportunities we offer, we’re proud to also partner with local schools across the Midlands and worked with around 5,000 students– positively shaping their future. We’re also able to provide hundreds of work experience opportunities every year, we welcomed over 560 young people through our doors last year, giving them a taster into the working world. Sharan Gill, Education Officer says: “Young people need information about careers and the skills to join the world of work when they are older. “We’re able to provide employability skills and training, mock interviews, things like CV writing, how to ace interviews, growing confidence and relationship building to help positively shape a young person’s future.” We’d encourage anyone – at any age in fact – to check out what opportunities we have available to help kickstart a career with us here: http://ms.spr.ly/6044lOR8K. #YEW

We’re working hard to make a positive difference to the health of rivers and streams in hundreds of places across the region. Here, one of the team, David, talks about the work going on at Church Stretton in Shropshire. The new storm tanks we’re building here will hold thousands of litres of extra rainwater after heavy rain, before releasing it slowly to our treatment works. That will lead to fewer spills into local rivers – better for everyone. This is one part of our £450 million investment into restoring river health and reducing the use of storm overflows. She’s the inspiring supermum who juggled raising two daughters and TEN foster kids during a record-breaking 47-year career at Severn Trent. IT and software licensing expert Cathy Wood, 63, is the second longest serving female employee out of 9,000 workers here at Severn Trent. Her many roles over the years have included helping customers, introducing computer technology, and providing data to decide on potential hosepipe bans. Part of her role was delivering post direct to desks, in the days before computers and emails. She recalled: “It was a great way to get to know people and we sometimes had a laugh by throwing the letters and making people catch them! Today, her job involves keeping track of all technology inventory at sites and the licences and software needs. She also helps employees with licensing technology issues. Cathy, whose official title is Configuration Software Licence Analyst, said: “I remember we only had one computer at some sites and people had to queue to use it - and the first mobile phones were the size of bricks! “Technology changed the way we work. The emergence of software like Microsoft Teams means you can be anywhere and still connect directly with others in the business. That was vital in lockdown.” Looking to the future, she has no plans to retire anytime soon and added: “This is my second home. I’ve been here for 47 years, longer than I’ve been married, had my own home, and longer than I’ve had children. “I have a great job and work with wonderful people. Thank you for the memories!” Thank you, Cathy ❤️
