🔍 The Critical Role and Vulnerabilities of GTP. GTP (GPRS Tunneling Protocol) is essential for interconnectivity in 4G and 5G networks, yet it carries significant security concerns and rising vulnerabilities. 🔒 GTP Security Concerns: The inherent flaws The lack of real-time user location verification contributes to many successful attacks. Subscriber credentials are only verified at the S-GW equipment, providing an exploit for attackers. More thorough checks on subscriber data are needed. ⚠️ Emerging Threat Vectors: Our research shows that over 70% of tested networks with exposed GTP contain at least one security vulnerability. GTPDOOR, a sophisticated Linux backdoor, targets the GPRS Roaming Exchange (GRX) network. This attack uses the GTP-C protocol to create a covert channel, evading traditional security measures. As the GTP protocol, designed for legacy networks, continues to be used in 4G and 5G networks, these vulnerabilities are carried forward and more are getting added, posing a significant threat to the security and reliability of 5G networks.
