A brilliant opportunity to celebrate impact and excellence in the voluntary carbon sector! ⬇
Nominations are open for Environmental Finance's Annual Voluntary Carbon Markets Rankings. This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate impact and excellence in the voluntary carbon sector. The #WoodlandCarbonCode has been commended in the past and we’d greatly appreciate your support again this year. Submit your nomination for the best greenhouse gas crediting programme / standards setter by Friday 26 July. 🌳 The Woodland Carbon Code is the quality assurance standard for UK woodland carbon projects. 🌳 It empowers landowners, organisations and businesses to address climate change by creating and supporting woodland projects across the UK. 🌳 Informed by the latest research, the code is internationally recognised for high standards of sustainable forest and carbon management and endorsed by the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance. 🌳 Our projects provide a range of social and environmental benefits for local communities, including biodiversity, employment and educational opportunities, advantages for farming and improvements in health and wellbeing. 🌳 Projects validated to the code have created 35,000 hectares of woodland and are predicted to sequester over 11.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over their lifetime. Almost a quarter of Scots have collected Non-Timber Forest Products in the previous five years, with 80% of those people gathering them in the last 12 months. So what are Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) and what is the current guidance on them? In short, NTFPs can range from edible foods, berries, seeds to oils and resins from plants, right through to woody materials used in wreaths and baskets. We've written a Blog on NTFPs to explain what they are and why refreshed guidance on their use is important. Earlier in the week, Rural Affairs Secretary Mairi Gougeon spent the day on Knoydart seeing a range of work and activities that the THE KNOYDART FOREST TRUST and the Knoydart Foundation are involved in with local people. It was really inspiring as they are involved in so many sustainable projects which support their community, its economy and the environment. The visit was also supported by our own Scottish Forestry staff, NatureScot and the Alliance for Scotland's Rainforest. Great work everyone! Great news for tree planting in Dumfries and Galloway! At the launch of the scheme, which can offer up to £1,000 for small scale native planting projects, Doug Howieson, Scottish Forestry’s Conservator for South Scotland, said: “Growing more trees in Dumfries and Galloway is very important because it provides so many benefits, ranging from tackling climate change to restoring nature, whilst also enhancing the places we live and work in. "Scottish Forestry is delighted to support this initiative which will help boost tree planting across the region in a large variety of locations. Everyone loves planting trees and this project ranges from a single tree up to a quarter of a hectare in size. It’s a great opportunity for schools and community groups to plant trees and do something wonderful for the environment.” 👇 👇 👇

Rural Affairs Secretary Mairi Gougeon has today launched a new strategic approach for Scotland's rainforest which aims to help improve and expand this precious natural habitat. The new approach aims to work at a landscape scale and strengthen the positive partnership work already in place to restore the rainforest, tackling key threats and targeting public and private funding into projects over the longer-term. Initially, the plan is to focus on nine key rainforest areas within the rainforest zone which are already undertaking action and engagement and developing co-operative working. New areas within the zone will be brought in for development over time. Ms Gougeon launched the new strategy during a visit to Knoydart, organised by the fantastic Knoydart Forest Trust. News release and link to the strategy is here: https://lnkd.in/eDTcQB3p (Thanks to Scottish Forestry's Ian Collier for the pic) #rainforest #strategy #knoydart #woodland #conservation #rainforestzone
