Students have been given a detailed insight into potential careers in forestry on site visits arranged by Scottish Woodlands Ltd. The group from SRUC - Scotland's Rural College - saw the industry close up and personal at Glen of Rothes, south of Elgin in Moray, and Sleepieshill, to the east of Elgin. The visit was arranged for students from SRUC's Aberdeen campus who have taken, or are scheduled to take, forestry modules as part of their Countryside Management course. Ben Taylor, a Forest Manager based in Scottish Woodlands' office in Fochabers, Moray, said: "The purpose was to give the students a real-life insight to enhance their knowledge of the role of a forest manager, and other opportunities in the forestry sector." Scottish Woodlands Ltd was also represented on the visit by Assistant Forest Manager Yolanda Piotrowicz and student placement Alejandro Casabuena. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eg4vZAVm

We hosted Johnstonebridge Primary School at one of our timber harvesting sites today. The Forest Classroom the school usually has access too is temporarily out of action while we clear some neighbouring trees. We watched the timber harvester and then chainsaw operators felling trees from a distance and then went for a closer look at the machinery used and a demonstration of tree climbing. It's hard not to join in with the excitement and shout 'TIMBER' when the big Sitka came crashing down. We are planning a repeat visit in the winter for some fun replanting trees.

A delegation of forestry and wood interests, led by Confor: Confederation of Forest Industries (UK), took the trees and timber message to Government - by engaging with Forestry Minister Mary Creagh CBE MP and a wide range of politicians at the Labour Party (UK) conference in Liverpool. The industry team attended fringe events and receptions, as well as briefing politicians from across the UK at the Confor stand in the exhibition hall at Labour's largest-ever party conference - with more than 20,000 people there. "Getting the Labour Party to recognise the significance of our £2 billion industry was a key focus for us at Liverpool," Stuart Goodall said. "It was especially valuable to have a detailed conversation with Mary Creagh as the new Forest Minister - and I look forward to having further engagement with her at our policy conference at Westminster on 5th December, and in the run-up to it." David Robertson, Investment & Business Development Director with Scottish Woodlands Ltd, said: “The election has seen lots of new MPs elected in constituencies where we have offices and forests - including David Smith in North Northumberland and Steve Witherden in Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr [in north Wales]. They were really keen to engage, as were the Forestry Minister, Mary Creagh, and other members of the Defra team. There’s a great deal to build on from the conference.” Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eDzyWpeT
