Our Industry Sustainability team members are often on the road, so this time, we asked SWA Research Officer Kieran Howitt, and SWA Head of Environment, Science & Innovation, Anna Graham to take us with them in a video diary as they visited #Islay. 📹 Visiting Suntory Global Spirits' new Peatland Water Sanctuary site, Laphorig Distillery, Kilchoman Distillery, Port Ellen Distillery and Diageo's Castlehill Moss, Anna and Kieran spent a busy few days with our member companies, meeting to understand their ambitions, projects and challenges.

About us
The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is the trade body for the Scotch Whisky industry. Its role is to advance the global interests and profile of Scotch Whisky, our members and of the industry as a whole. SWA membership is for companies which are distillers, bottlers, brand owners or brokers of Scotch Whisky. We see the Scotch whisky industry as a significant Scottish and British economic and cultural asset that boosts growth and jobs, that strongly supports the communities with which we work, and that combines the very best of the traditional and the modern. By building strong relationships with all levels of government and opinion-formers and by making a visible impact on public debate we will: • Be a trusted voice in the debate on alcohol and society • Support a competitive, sustainable and fairly taxed industry • Safeguard the Scotch Whisky category • Ensure fair access to all markets worldwide. The SWA can trace its origins back to October 1912. The original organisation, the Wine & Spirit Brand Association changed its name to the Whisky Association in 1917 which in turn became the SWA in 1940.

The #MadeToBeMeasured campaign aims to raise awareness of the alcohol content of drinks and the recommended weekly unit guidelines, with #ScotchWhisky at its heart 🥃 Earlier this week, the campaign brought together ambassadors from across our member companies to look at the barriers, challenges and opportunities for talking about responsible drinking in their work, at all different touchpoints - from whisky trade shows, to distillery experiences, to online advertisements. With year one reaching over 1.5 million people, year two is looking at how the industry can further bring the campaign to life and help people continue savouring their Scotch. A huge thank you to our attendees for their insight and ideas on how we further this campaign! Learn more about the #MadeToBeMeasured campaign 👉 https://lnkd.in/eRANq8rz

🤝 Congratulations to Andrew Swift, Senior Legal Counsel with the Scotch Whisky Association, on his accreditation by The Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in #IntellectualProperty law. With only a handful of in-house accredited IP law specialists on the Society's records, including our Deputy Director of Legal Affairs, Lindesay Low, this achievement is a testament to the important work done by Andrew as part of the wider legal team to protect #ScotchWhisky globally. This follows on from Andrew's recognition as 2023 In-house Rising Star of the year by The Legal 500. 🆕Thinking of investing in a cask of #ScotchWhisky? We've updated our guidance for what to consider. Before purchasing, you should be aware of the special nature of the trade in Scotch Whisky and the costs involved. 🥃 Scotch Whisky casks are no different from other commodities, whose values rise and fall according to supply and demand. The only certainty about owning a cask is that it will lose roughly 2% of its contents through evaporation each year. 👉 https://lnkd.in/e4qRqRde

Our Chief Executive Mark Kent CMG was pleased to join this cross-sector gathering with new Department for Business and Trade Secretary of State Jonathan Reynolds MP #ScotchWhisky is the UK's largest food and drink export - with over 40 bottles shipped every second - and is 2% of all UK goods exports Developing new opportunities for the industry to trade around the world, by reducing tariffs and non-tariff barriers, is crucial to future global growth, and in turn boosting jobs and investment in Scotland and across the UK
"We can’t do this alone. We must work with business every step of the way. It’s why I’m asking some questions of business owners to help shape our approach." Read more about our Secretary of State's meeting with businesses 👇

📰 "HM Revenue & Customs data shows that excise duty revenue from spirits is down by more than £100 million since August compared to the same period last year. Not a forecast, not a model, real-world incontrovertible evidence that increasing tax on Scotch has literally resulted in less money that could be spent on public services." Read Mark Kent CMG's letter in The Herald Scotland on why the #ScotchWhisky industry is asking the new government to bring the duty on Scotch and other spirits closer to the European average over the next Parliament. 🥃 👇 https://lnkd.in/eCh7pBx4
