Save the Children Save the Children is the world's leading independent organisation for children. We work in around 120 countries. Our vision is to live in a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation. Last year Save the Children's programmes and campaigns reached more than 55 million children directly around the world, through our and our partners' work. We work to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. Across all of our work, we pursue several core values: accountability, ambition, collaboration, creativity and integrity.

  • A public health emergency has been declared by the World Health Organization over a new outbreak of #mpox⚠️ Children are at higher risk than adults of contracting the virus - with 70% of DRC’s 14,901 cases in children under 15 – and almost four times more likely to die. We know from decades of experience that it is the most vulnerable children who will be worse off - like undernourished children and those living in crowded refugee camps with limited access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene. ➡️ In DRC, Save the Children is responding to the mpox outbreak in North Kivu and South Kivu through water, sanitation and health services support, including providing PPE and training leaders in engagement, communication, and community alert systems for identifying and reporting suspected cases. The outbreak is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis, with over 7 million people displaced, primarily due to conflict and a collapsed health system.    ➡️ We are also working with the national government in Burundi on a national response plan to the rising number of infections. 🔇 It is critical that authorities and donors ramp up control measures, especially efforts to get vaccines to those who need them, in order to save children’s lives.

  • "Nothing prepares you for what it's actually like to be in Gaza." Becky Platt is a paediatric nurse who has been treating injured children in a field hospital in Gaza for Save the Children. In this harrowing account, she speaks about the devastating impact of the war in #Gaza on children. • In 900 days of war in #Ukraine there have been over 2,000 child casualties⚠️ At least 70 children were killed or injured in July, making it the deadliest month in the conflict since September 2022, according to figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. We are calling for all parties to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law and abstain from using explosive weapons with wide-area effects in populated areas. Civilians and civilian infrastructures are not a target and must be protected from attack at all times. #StopTheWarOnChildren

  • ⚠Conflict. Hunger. Child Labour. Displacement⚠ This is the reality for children in #Sudan right now. They've suffered unimaginable loss, physical and emotional distress, and prevalent violations of their rights. They have been forced from their homes, and lost their right to education. Now, the UN has declared famine in parts of the country - children are going hungry. This is forcing parents to rely on desperate measures such as child labour to get by. Despite the staggering levels of need, this crisis is not getting the attention it deserves. You can support our life-saving work in Sudan and other countries across the world. • More than 38,000 people, half of them children, were displaced in Afghanistan in early 2024 due to extreme weather⚠️ Raouf*, 13, lives in a village in southern Afghanistan impacted by severe droughts. With water drying up, he has to walk miles daily to fetch poor quality water, making him and his friends sick and often late for school. Thanks to a solar-powered water supply system we implemented in the village, children no longer have to spend large parts of their day fetching water. Helping communities adapt to and prepare for the impacts of #ClimateChange must be a priority. #SaveTomorrow

  • Breastfeeding gives children the healthiest start to life as it protects them from disease, malnutrition, and death. But digital marketing of infant formula is undermining global breastfeeding efforts. Our new report, drawing from a comprehensive scoping review encompassing 12 recent peer-reviewed studies (2020-2023), identifies 5,183 instances of digital marketing that violated the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes (the Code). Explore in detail how companies use these tactics to impact breastfeeding and undermine informed choice, together with learning what our recommendations are to halt this practice. • 10 years ago, on the 3rd August 2014, horrifying events took place in Sinjar, Iraq. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) killed, captured and displaced all 400,000 Yazidi people, a genocide that disproportionately affected children: ❌ About 10,000 Yazidis were killed or abducted, half of all those executed were children. ❌ Nearly all (93%) of those who eventually died on Mount Sinjar from injuries or lack of food and water were also children. ❌ Of the around 6,400 abducted Yazidis, it’s estimated about half were children - boys were sent to ISIS training camps and girls were subjected to rape and sexual enslavement Today, about 2,700 Yazidis remain missing, including around 1,300 who were children at the time of their abduction. And those children who survived, have been living in tents for over a decade, with insufficient access to basic services and no means to return home in a voluntary and dignified manner. Yazidi children, like all children, deserve the right to safety, security and access to education. Listen to Soraya Ali to learn more⬇️
