World class care for our community
About us
We provide health care services from Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford and adult community healthcare services from Haslemere Hospital and Milford Hospital. Royal Surrey County Hospital provides emergency and general hospital services to a population of more than 330,000 across south west Surrey. It is also home to St Luke’s, our specialist tertiary Cancer Centre, which offers state of the art diagnostic and treatment services to a population of up to 2 million across Surrey, West Sussex, Hampshire and to patients from across the UK and abroad. Milford and Haslemere community hospitals provide health care services to adults across Guildford and Waverley. The Trust has recently been rated as ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for being caring, effective and safe, and ‘Outstanding’ for being responsive to people’s needs and for our maternity services. We employ over 4,000 members of staff making us one of Guildford’s largest employers. In addition, the hospital is supported by a thriving group of 500 volunteers all of whom provide valuable services on an independent, voluntary basis. We attract referrals from across the country for some specialties including urology and our Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit (key-hole surgery) is one of only three such training units in the UK. Our patients also benefit from state of the art diagnostic equipment including two MRI scanners, four CT scanners, interventional radiology equipment and a gamma camera. We have one of the lowest mortality rates in the country. We see around 336,000 outpatients a year, 90,000 patients are admitted for treatment, around 74,000 patients attend our A&E department and we deliver around 3,000 babies.

“The overwhelming message that we receive is that our staff always go the extra distance to make the patient’s experience as enjoyable and as stress-free as it can be,” – Jenny Cowell, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Senior Sister and Team Lead. Twelve nurses and healthcare assistants make up the SDEC team. Together, they assess, diagnose and treat patients in need of urgent care who are not suffering from a life-threatening condition and do not need to be seen in our Emergency Department. The service is open seven days a week and cares for patients who are referred by their GPs, our Emergency Department, or one of our wards or outpatient departments. The team is extremely busy with staff treating around 40 to 60 patients each day 😱 Let us give a huge round of applause to our SDEC team 👏 #RoyalSurrey #NHS #SDEC

“The patients are happier, eat better and feel that they are getting a more personalised approach to care,” - Lynette Nunn, Senior Sister at Milford Hospital. A campaign encouraging patients at our Milford Hospital to get out of bed and switch from their pyjamas to normal clothes has begun in a bid to improve social interactions and overall health. “I felt so nervous sitting on the train that took me from Heathrow airport to Guildford. My biggest fear was that I would miss my stop and get lost!” Meet Gulzar Waljee, the first nurse of South Asian heritage to work at Royal Surrey, who came to the UK in 1959. To celebrate #SouthAsianHeritageMonth (18 July – 17 August), we asked Gulzar to recall her three years at Royal Surrey, where her long and successful career in midwifery began. "We both love working at Royal Surrey. We got our first jobs here from university and have worked in different teams within the Dietetic Department. As dietitians, we see patients from all walks of life and with all different types of conditions. We know Royal Surrey Charity helps both patients and staff, and it's so nice to know that we are contributing to that in a small way." Two of our amazing dietitians, Laura Dobson and Kate McCully, completed the gruelling Race to the Stones Challenge this weekend, running 100 km in 14 hours and finishing 26th out of 75 in their age and gender category and we couldn't be more proud! 💜 They said: “The best part was crossing the finish line! It was a difficult two days, both physically and mentally, but we met so many people along the way and talked about our fundraising for Royal Surrey Charity. Once the legs have recovered, I'm sure we'll be signing up for another!" Thank you so much Laura and Kate for raising vital funds for our patients and staff! 🙏 If you'd like to support them, here is their JustGiving page: https://lnkd.in/gAK-mWD7 #fundraiser #royalsurrey #charityfundraiser #nhsfundraiser #nhscharity #surreycharity #racetostoneschallenge #nhsstaff #nhsheroes

At the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, we're proud to lead the way in enhancing patient care. Our #teamawesome was the first in the UK to introduce #Penthrox, a self-administering painkiller, for men undergoing transperineal prostate biopsies under local anaesthetic. This innovative approach has not only improved patient comfort but has also been recognised with Best Abstract Awards at both the European Association of Urology and THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF UROLOGICAL SURGEONS LIMITED meetings. It's heartening to see other trusts now looking to adopt Penthrox, leveraging our experience to enhance their own patient care strategies. By prioritising patient quality of care and a patient-centred approach, we aim to make prostate biopsies less daunting, ensuring comfort and reducing stigma. Our goal is to redefine the patient experience, removing barriers that may prevent men suspected of having #prostatecancer from seeking necessary medical help and paving the way for better healthcare outcomes through proactive health management.
