We wanted to share with you news about one of our high value equipment replacement projects... Watch the film to find out more about the work being done to update Cath Lab 1 (Cardiology Catheterisation Laboratory, in full) at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Service continuity is assured with the installation of a mobile cath lab for planned patient care, while the refurbishment and upgrade of the lab and staff changing rooms has also meant that we have already fitted out a new Changing Places facility in Trelawny Wing. The project work will continue until Christmas this year, with patients being welcomed into the upgraded laboratory early in the new year 2025. Outstanding Care for One and All!
About us
The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) was founded in 1992 as part of the second wave of NHS Trusts to be established in England. We have three main hospital sites: Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro; St Michael’s Hospital, Hayle; and West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance. RCHT also provides imaging and outpatient services at a number of locations across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, as well as birthing centres in St Austell, Helston and on the Isles of Scilly. We serve around 474,000 residents across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, with the remainder of Cornwall’s population in the east and far north of the county looking to Plymouth and North Devon respectively, for their acute hospital services. As a year round tourist destination, the number of people we care for is boosted by holidaymakers, which can more than double our population at the busiest times. Around 6,700 people work together across our hospitals and services, including 400 volunteers and an in-house bank of over 1500 people working flexibly to help us respond to changes in demand. The Trust has teaching hospitals status as part of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (PCMD) and University of Exeter Medical School. Keeping at the forefront of medical advances, the Trust is continually developing its clinical services and is committed to maximising the range of specialist care that can be offered locally. Allied to this is a growing reputation for research and innovation. The Knowledge Spa on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site, the Cornwall base for medical students and the University of Plymouth Faculty of Health and Social Work, has further enhanced a strong reputation for training and education. This plays a vital part in attracting and retaining the Trust’s highly skilled teams of doctors, nurses and other health professionals who care for well over half a million people each year.

More gongs for our new Trelawny Scanning Suite and Lowen Ward Last week we were delighted to attend the Constructing Excellence South West awards alongside BAM UK & Ireland when they picked another top honour for our new Trelawny Scanning Suite and Lowen Ward building. It was named Infrastructure Project of the Year (over £5 million). On the same night, this fantastic building was recognised again when Jets Group #Otters and TClarke were named runners up in the Innovation category for the vacuum toilets installation. Having already been recognised at the Michelmores Property Awards and The Concrete Society Southwest Awards, we're so proud that this outstanding building is being recognised for its design and innovation. It was also the first new building at the Royal Cornwall Hospital to have the benefit of our Accessibility Advisory Group's input - ensuring good colour contrasts throughout, video intercom entry system, accessible bathroom designs and Makaton signage. Together with our many partners and stakeholders, we have created a wonderful and wonderfully accessible, environment in which we can deliver outstanding care for our patients. Last month, we installed a new state-of-the-art gamma camera in our Nuclear Medicine Department at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. It's a vital piece of kit, in a highly specialised area of the hospital that sees a diverse range of patients. Work included the installation of the replacement high-value Discovery NM30 camera provided by GE HealthCare, a new air handling unit (to improve ventilation), a complete room upgrade, and improvements to the department’s dispensary. A wonderful skylight was also installed in the gamma camera room, thanks to RCHT Charity funding. The new gamma camera technology delivers a wealth of improvements including better scan times, more diverse and better quality images, and less analogue noise. In some cases, the level of radioactive dose used can also be reduced. The outcome is an outstanding scanning room that has improved the patient and staff experience immeasurably. Our thanks to our construction partner Kier Group, and to Lewis Saundry IEng MICE MAPM from the hospital's Major Capital Projects team, who led on this project, and to Rachel Rhodes, the Clinical Lead. #Hospital #Imaging #JourneyOfImprovement #BuildingForOutstandingCare

We're bursting with pride today... Our Critical Care Healing Garden at the Royal Cornwall Hospital has won “Community Engagement Project of the Year” at the national, and highly prestigious, Construction News Awards. The Critical Care Healing Garden was opened in September 2023 after an extensive community fundraising campaign led by Cornish explorer Sir Robin Hanbury-Tenison alongside the RCHT Charity RCHT team, and the Critical Care team. Funded entirely by charitable donations, the courtyard can accommodate two hospital beds, as well as other critically-ill patients in wheelchairs, alongside their carers, families, and even pets. It is also one of the first gardens in the UK to be fitted with piped medical gases, making it accessible to even the most poorly of patients, who can experience the outdoors and nature as part of their recovery. Most days, the garden accommodates up to four patients, helping them to cope with their treatment and rehabilitation. The garden was designed by local Cornwall-based landscape architect Lavigne Lonsdale with extensive input from patients and staff. Construction was led by local contractor CORMAC, alongside Southwest Surfacing Specialists, also based in Cornwall. Truro-based WARD WILLIAMS ASSOCIATES LLP provided cost advice free of charge. Donations of time and materials were made from organisations, groups and individuals across the county, including from local artist Kurt Jackson, and the head gardeners from The Lost Gardens of Heligan, National Trust: Glendurgan Garden and The Palace Gardener. Lisa Niemand, Critical Care Matron at RCHT said: “Winning this award means a huge amount to our Critical Care team. It recognises the input and collaboration of the whole community – patients, families, RCHT staff, contractors and suppliers, artists, fundraisers, and more! This journey would not have been achieved without everyone working together and combining clinical need with hospital constraints to deliver our outstanding healing garden.” Karen Murrish. RCHT Charity’s Fundraising Manager said: “We are thrilled the Critical Care Healing Garden has been recognised by Construction News as the best community engagement project in the UK this year. The RCHT Charity team is very proud to have supported the fundraising campaign and grateful to all of those who have donated and helped to make it possible.” Roberta Fuller, Associate Director for Major Capital Projects at RCHT, said: “It’s amazing to win this award for our Critical Care Healing Garden. It’s been a true community effort, not only in achieving the fundraising, but also all the local contractors who worked on the project, as well the generous donations made from local businesses. All have played a massive role in delivering this outstanding space for our critically-ill patients.” Martyn Lonsdale Craig T. Robert Hague MCMI Lynne Lees Kym Vigus Carolyn Garman
