  • We are very proud of cystic fibrosis patient Mehro for achieving a 2:1 in her BSc degree in biomedical engineering, having completed much of her work right here at Royal Papworth. Mehro has experienced lengthy inpatient admissions over the last couple of years, including at the start of her final term, during which she was unable to attend lectures in-person. However, thanks to ongoing support from our staff and a fierce determination to succeed, she has used her studies with Anglia Ruskin University to keep her occupied and focused - demonstrated by achieving a first for her dissertation. 👏🏻 Earlier this week - ahead of being discharged after her latest stay of 190 days - Mehro spoke to ITV Anglia about her positive mindset, fitting her studies around her CF and her gratitude towards our staff. Congratulations again, Mehro, on your achievement and for showing that cystic fibrosis is not a barrier that stops you from achieving. 💛 Thank you also to everyone in our multidisciplinary team who has been involved in Mehro's care and supported her through her studies. 💙 Cystic Fibrosis Trust #CysticFibrosis #University #RoyalPapworth #NHS #Excellence #Compassion #BiomedicalScience

  • Friday's hot, sunny weather attracted patients, staff and visitors alike outside to enjoy lunch around our duck pond and the wider Green and Gardens on campus. 😎 It was lovely to see those who were able to be outside taking advantage of our beautiful landscaped surroundings, but our local feathered friends probably had the best and coolest place to be - in the water! So here's 68 seconds of relaxation to start your weekend, courtesy of Royal Papworth's resident ducks. 🦆🦆🦆 Cambridge Biomedical Campus #Cambridge #Ducks

  • We recently welcomed eight Year 12 students from colleges around Cambridgeshire who are keen on studying medicine for a one-week work experience programme. The students had the opportunity to spend time throughout the hospital, meeting members of the multidisciplinary team as well as receiving sessions aimed at helping them with the challenges of applying to medical school. This has been part of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS) student education INSIGHT programme focused on widening participation, offering students hospital-based work experience, who may not otherwise have the opportunity. The programme has been led by Mr Jason Ali, Cardiothoracic Surgeon and SCTS Lead for Student Education, Mostin Hu a recently graduated Cambridge medical student who is part of the SCTS student committee and Anie Ponnaberanam, Lead Educator in our medical education team. Mr Ali said, "We are proud of the programme that we have put together and it has been really satisfying seeing how much the students are enjoying their time here at Papworth. "I hope that we have been able to inspire and motivate them to go on and apply to medical school in the Autumn." #WorkExperience #Medicine #Cambridgeshire #NHS #RoyalPapworth

  • Congratulations to everyone who has played a part in the early success of our enhanced recovery unit (ERU) since it opened in May. 📈🌟 This new dedicated space within critical care was opened for people to recover from cardiac surgery, before being discharged to the ward. Thanks to the expert care provided by our dedicated nurse-led team, which is supported by a lead surgeon and intensivist, 88% of patients admitted to the unit in its first seven weeks were discharged to the ward within 48 hours. Not only does this help improve patient flow through our hospital, but this approach should lead to shorter stays in hospital overall, getting people back home to their familiar surroundings and allowing us to care for even more patients. 👏🏻 Enhanced recovery is an evidence-based approach that helps people recover more quickly after having major surgery, allowing for a shorter stay in hospital. Spending a long time in hospital can lead to an increased risk of falling, sleep deprivation, catching infections and sometimes mental and physical deconditioning. Jonee Doronila, ERU Sister, said: “Our enhanced recovery unit has already benefitted more than 150 patients, providing them with a dedicated space to recover more quickly after cardiac surgery. “It’s testament to the entire team that a large number of these patients are being discharged to the ward within 48 hours and indeed many of these have actually been within 24 hours.” “Feedback from patients has been positive and as a new team I feel we have really gelled well together. "Our staff nurses are enjoying providing this enhanced care and our consultant surgeons and surgical registrars really appreciate the positive impact it is having on patient outcomes.” 💙 #CardiacSurgery #Surgery #EnhancedRecovery #Nursing #RoyalPapworth #NHS

  • Meet our lead governor Abigail Halstead who has been a governor for over three years 🏥 Governors are elected from public, patient and staff groups, and use their skills and experiences to support the work of the hospital and ensure that the Trust is accountable to local people. Abi has been under the care of our adult cystic fibrosis unit since 2011 and her care will be life long, so she is well-placed to empathise and help offer ideas for improvement based on her own positive and negative experiences of patient life and challenges. Being a governor allows Abi to look behind the scenes and engage with our Trust Board. We are currently seeking six public governors across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. It is important that our governors are from a variety of backgrounds. Therefore previous experience of working or volunteering within a hospital setting is not required and training is provided for the role. Nominations close this Friday (19 July) at 17:00. Nominations may be completed online or returned by post or email. Access the online nomination portal or download a nomination form: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/esPkCRqa

  • Over the past week we’ve been able to thank our staff with some summer treats which, even if the summer weather hasn’t turned up on cue, has still proved extremely popular. 💙 Firstly, following the success of last year’s #NHS75 celebratory BBQ, we once again teamed up with our colleagues at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to offer a summer BBQ. Thousands of #NHS staff were able to enjoy complimentary free food and drink, music and stands from our staff networks and charity colleagues, out on the Green and the Gardens here at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. 🍔🎶 For Royal Papworth staff who were unable to get outside for their lunch break, we organised a similar, alternative complimentary BBQ meal in our restaurant, primarily for those in scrubs, courtesy of our colleagues from OCS. 🌭🍔 Night staff that evening were able to enjoy a refreshing treat in the shape of some ice creams. 🍦 Finally, colleagues at our Kingfisher House office in Huntingdon, had their own summer lunchtime treat this week where they chose from a menu of four complimentary hot dogs. 🌭 A huge thank you to our staff for everything that you do to help us make a difference to our patients, every day. Thank you also to everyone involved in the organisation of these events, including Royal Papworth Hospital Charity for their funding. 💙 #RoyalPapworth #Collaboration #Excellence #NHS #ThankYou #ThankingStaff

  • Today marks five years since our new hospital was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. 👑🏥 As part of the visit on Tuesday 9 July 2019, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth met with staff and patients throughout the hospital and also visited some of our start-of-the-art facilities, including a bronchoscopy suite, cath lab and our critical care unit. During her visit she met with teams from respiratory, cardiology, surgery and nursing, as well as speaking to recent and former patients. She also unveiled a plaque which proudly stands inside our main atrium. The visit extended a tradition that started back in 1918 when Queen Mary made the first royal visit to Papworth. • We have recently completed a number of ward moves designed to allow us to make even better use of our hospital building, benefitting staff and patients. 🧩🏥 Our Respiratory Studies & Sleep Centre (RSSC) day case patients have recently moved to 4 North West, which follows hot on the heels of cardiology's move to 3 North East. 🔃 In simple terms this means all cardiology inpatient services are located on our third floor, while all respiratory inpatient and day cases are on floor four. The only exception to this is our sleep lab, which due to the unique design of its rooms remains on 3 North West. 🛌🏻💤 Eilish Midlane, Chief Executive, said: “The planning for these moves have not been without their challenges, but the professional attitude of everyone involved across nursing and medical teams, operational leaders, estates and digital has been exceptional. "Thank you to everyone who has played their part. We hope that all of these moves will make the experience and sense of team cohesion better for our staff, and also further improve the patient experience.” #Excellence #Collaboration #Facilities #FacilitiesOptimisation #Hospital #NHS #RoyalPapworth
