The Ballroom is one of the #19StateRooms visitors can explore this summer at Buckingham Palace. Visitors will be able to see the stunning portrait of The King by Jonathan Yeo up close during a visit to the State Rooms this summer. The portrait depicts His Majesty wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards, of which he was made Regimental Colonel in 1975. Today is Garter Day. The Garter Day procession is one of the most colourful ceremonies held at Windsor Castle every year. The Order of the Garter was founded in 1348, the oldest and most prestigious order of chivalry in Britain. The King is Sovereign of the Order and several members of the Royal Family are also Knights, along with Knights or Ladies Companion who are chosen to join the Order due to their significant contribution to national life. Accompanied by a marching band, members of the Order take part in a procession from the State Apartments to St George’s Chapel, wearing the velvet robes of the Order, glistening insignia and ostrich-plumed hats that echo medieval costume. Visitors to Windsor Castle throughout the year can visit the Garter Throne Room in the State Apartments where the Garter Day ceremony is held on this day and new knights are welcomed into the Order of the Garter.
