The second of 16 Protector aircraft, the RAF's latest Remotely Piloted Air System has arrived at RAF Waddington. Engineers from 31 Squadron have completed the build and initial testing of this second aircraft, prior to further test and evaluation, led by 56 Squadron over the coming months. This weekend at the Royal International Air Tattoo, Boeing Defense, Space & Security announced that its military aircraft, including the RAF’s Poseidon, Chinook, C-17 Globemaster, and future aircraft such as the Wedgetail, can operate on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at currently approved limits of up to 50% blend with conventional fuel. The global No Technical Objection (NTO) states there are no technical issues with Boeing defence aircraft operating on synthetic aviation turbine fuels, which includes SAF and the announcement is a welcome step in the more widespread adoption of SAF by air forces around the world. As a result of previous work in 2020, the RAF cleared all of its military aircraft for 50% SAF and has continued to be at the forefront of trailing the use of SAF with the data gathered informing the MoD’s Defence Aviation Net Zero Strategy. As well as contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions, more widespread adoption of SAF amongst allies will enhance global interoperability, maintaining the RAF’s ability to operate anywhere that is required. The RAF are set to use Augmented Reality (AR) to evaluate whether the revolutionary technology can be used to help increase the number of frontline fighter pilots. 💻 Under a contract with the UK Ministry of Defence, BAE Systems will conduct an in-flight demonstration of the Advanced Tactical Augmented Reality Systems (ATARS) on a Hawk TMk2 aircraft later this year. ATARS, developed by US company Red 6, enables pilots to identify, engage and defeat virtual adversaries programmed to act and react as a pilot would experience in hostile combat, and co-operate with synthetic wing personnel whilst airborne. The work was undertaken by engineers at BAE Systems’ flight testing facility in Warton, Lancashire, supported by teams from Leonardo UK. This included electromagnetic testing in a unique anechoic chamber (pictured). The radar, contracted for by the UK Ministry of Defence’s procurement agency Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), will support RAF operations in the most challenging situations.
