Today we are sharing a short film about homelessness. The film is about Glyn, who used to work for Riverside in our Housing First team. In his own words, Glyn tells the story of his lived experience of rough sleeping, substance abuse, supported housing, being stabbed and rehabilitation. At one point, Glyn lived at one of our supported housing services in Manchester. Hear first-hand from Glyn how through support, rehab and his own grit and determination, he turned his life around and eventually became a Housing First worker at Riverside where he has used his own lived experience to engage and make a hugely positive impact on the lives of people with complex needs. His story is inspirational. At times it is also deeply distressing. Our hope is that this film helps make the case for the importance of support services, many of which are facing cuts as a result of strained local authority finances. 🚨Urgent Call for Sheltered Housing Regeneration!🚨 https://lnkd.in/dqrzYvpD A recent inquiry by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Housing and Care for Older People has highlighted the need for urgent action to regenerate the estimated 527,000 sheltered housing properties in the UK. The report, launched yesterday at the UK House of Lords by Lord Best (Chair of the Inquiry), Lois Beech (secretariat), Julienne Elizabeth Meyer CBE (Chair of the Older People's Housing Taskforce) and Paul Tennant, Chief Executive of Abbeyfield who sponsored the Inquiry, reveals the significant scale of reinvestment required to provide good quality, accessible homes for our ageing population. The report urges policymakers, government agencies, and housing providers to prioritise the refurbishment of outdated sheltered housing to meet contemporary standards. Key recommendations include a 10% target for older people’s housing and flexible capital investment approaches. The panel call on the Government, Homes England, and the Greater London Authority to recognise the value of investing in sheltered housing refurbishment. This is not just about improving buildings; it’s about enhancing mental and physical well-being and ensuring a decent home for our older residents. Howard Gayle, the first black player to sign for Liverpool Football Club, has been honoured with a new mural in Toxteth. Commissioned by Liverpool charity Mandela8 on one of our properties, we were delighted to be able to help fund the project. The mural itself is the work of Liverpool artist John Culshaw. Our Head of Homes & Communities, Sarah Wall, said: “Through Riverside Foundation funding, we’re really pleased to have supported this project, which has enabled an incredible artist to bring this inspiring piece to the community. “The messages carried by the mural not only create a feeling of hope and inclusion, but also opportunities for discussion whilst celebrating an iconic local role model. “Our Foundation exists to help people to overcome obstacles and to support initiatives that benefit the communities in which we work, including money advice and affordable warmth services and projects that inspire a sense of togetherness and pride in our neighbourhoods. We feel this mural embodies this vision and are excited for the community to see it.” https://lnkd.in/gBTDd4e4

Yesterday's King's Speech was welcomed by many in the sector for the focus on housing and planning. Our chief financial officer Cris McGuinness, responded to the Speech in Inside Housing, praising the plan to ban no-fault evictions and saying that it is “heartening to see the new housing and planning bill at the centre of the new government’s first King’s Speech." She said: “As one of the biggest builders of affordable housing in England, streamlining the planning system will help unpick some of the blockages which stop economic growth and prevent the delivery of much needed new homes and infrastructure". However, Cris said that planning reform alone is “not enough". She said: “As economic conditions improve the government must provide significant grant funding to deliver the social homes we need. “The new government has been clear their number one priority is growing the economy. “Increasing the supply of social and affordable housing in generation has the potential to turbocharge growth as evidenced by analysis from the Centre for Economics and Business Research earlier this year – the government could add £51.2bn to the economy, including £12bn profit to the taxpayer, by building 90,000 social homes. “We understand public finances are tight. However, after years of uncertainty and underfunding our sector desperately needs stability so we urge the government to commit to a long-term settlement for social housing rents.”  Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eY37mQ3N

Well done to all of our colleagues who took part in this year’s Stretch for CHC fitness challenge. Colleagues walked, ran, cycled and swam an incredible 6,513km – congrats to all our runners and riders for a tremendous effort. And well done to colleagues who scaled a number of summits in the Peak District last weekend to raise money for the CHC and Ahead of the Game Foundation. Thanks to your efforts we’ve raised £1,200 for Church Homeless Charity, our charitable partner who provide our customers with grants that help them make a permanent move away from the streets and into more stable environments. Yesterday, the new Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves used her first speech to the Treasury to announce plans to reintroduce mandatory local housing targets, reform the planning system and create a “task force to accelerate stalled housing sites in our country”. Our Executive Director for Care & Support John Glenton commented on the announcement: “Reintroducing local housing targets will help to incentivise the need to deliver more much-needed new homes in the right places. “According to YouGov polling housing was consistently the fourth most significant issue for voters during the General Election with voters only more concerned about the economy, the NHS and immigration and asylum. “However, increasing housebuilding and creating more good quality homes will help provide solutions to the nation’s top three concerns by boosting the economy, reducing demand on the NHS and delivering a safe, secure home. “Currently more than 54,000 acres of Green Belt land is classified as contaminated land providing enough pace to build more than one million homes. “No-one wants to see high-quality Green Belt land built upon but we need to stop treating contaminated and low-quality Green Belt lands as if it’s the height of Helvellyn, although planning reform comes with its own set of challenges and might be as gruelling as climbing a mountain. “However, planning reform alone is not enough – as public finances improve the government must also provide significant grant funding to deliver the social homes we need. “Ultimately, if we are to bring the 145,800 homeless children out of temporary accommodation in England and seriously work towards ending homelessness, we need to get on and build more social homes so it’s encouraging to see the Treasury already taking a strong house building stance.” https://lnkd.in/e_fdfEyA
