Chinese OEMs are looking to build out EV capacity in Europe   22% of BEVs sold in Europe came from China in 2023. With the EU Commission’s provisional duties on Chinese made BEVs now in force, 25% of those vehicles imported from China would have faced the top tariff of 47.6%, 61% would have faced a tariff of 30.8%, and the remaining 14% would have faced a rate of either 29.9% or 27.4%.   While the duties will not become permanent until November, providing they receive sufficient support from EU countries, numerous OEMs have already announced plans to establish EV production capacity within Europe.   • Leapmotor is already manufacturing EVs in Europe in partnership with Stellantis. • Chery will begin production in Spain later this year. • BYD plans a production facility in Hungary from 2025, and Turkey from 2026. • SAIC is considering sites in Hungary, Czechia and Spain to build an EV production facility. • Zeekr is exploring the possibility of using Geely’s production capacity in Europe to build its BEVs. • XPeng open to investing in overseas plants, and with the introduction of the tariffs, Europe would be a likely choice given it is Xpeng’s second largest market.   We discuss the EU Commission’s tariffs on Chinese made BEVs, as well as other protectionist policies and global EV production updates in the recently released highlights presentation from our Q2 EV Production Outlook. The latest Rho Motion battery storage stats are in! 🔋The BESS market continues to lead battery demand growth, with nearly 60GWh of grid scale storage installed in the first half of 2024, an impressive 62% y-o-y increase! 🚗 For comparison, battery demand from EVs has increased ~20% so far in 2024, resulting in growing market share from BESS reaching 15% compared to 11% for the same period in 2023! 📈 The Rho Motion BESS database now tracks close to 5,000 stationary storage projects globally, accounting for over 1TWh of batteries!
