Rewilding is hope. It addresses climate and ecological breakdown, with people at its heart. Think big, act wild!

About us

Rewilding is hope for the future. It is the large scale restoration of nature to the point where it can take care of itself again - and take care of us. It can replenish, reconnect and revitalise nature, and has people, communities and green economies at its heart. It captures carbon, prevents flood and droughts and wildfires. It cleans air, soil and water. It improves our health and well being. Because if nature thrives, we all thrive. Rewilding Britain was established in 2015 as the first charity in Britain focused on rewilding. We want to see rewilding restoring and rejuvenating 30% of Britain by 2030. We prove that rewilding can work - by bringing together the hundreds of landowners and managers across Britain in our new Rewilding Network - large landowners, NGOs, farmers, community groups and local projects - to share experiences, research, expertise and support. We also push for policy change and funding to enable and support rewilding, and engage thousands more in campaigning, spreading the word and supporting us. Join us!

Kelp forests are key to a healthy planet — they teem with wildlife, capture carbon and protect our coasts 🌿 Did you know that off the Sussex coast, 96% of kelp forests had been wiped out by the 1980s, largely due to a rapid expansion in the area of nearshore bottom trawling? Thanks to #marinerewilding projects across Britain, such as the @sussex-kelp-recovery-project, these vital marine ecosystems are slowly recovering.  🔗Visit our website to learn more about kelp and its crucial ecological role in our new #rewilding key species spotlight [link in comments]. The community at Abriachan purchased 540 hectares of plantation forest 26 years ago. Since they took ownership, they’ve been slowly reverting a large portion of this back to native woodland. 🌳 Read their story: https://lnkd.in/e6juWMQ9 In what was once a monoculture of densely planted conifers with limited access, the mosaic of habitats now support aspen, willow, scots pine, rowan and birch. 🌿 With a large network of walking paths and mountain bike trails to be explored and an array of community events throughout the year, this forest now works for the people and wildlife that live here. 🦆 #RewildingNation

We're delighted to welcome four exceptional new trustees to Rewilding Britain 🎉 Their extensive experience will be invaluable in helping us achieve our charitable goals. Meet Justin Albert (Chair elect), Beth Collier, John Cook and Rachel Solomon Williams. Justin Albert OBE has spent his career championing our natural world. As a filmmaker for the National Geographic and Discovery Channel and as Head of Development and Production for Animal Planet, he’s helped deliver inspiring stories globally. For 13 years he ran National Trust Wales, protecting cherished landscapes. He now partners with Sir Tim Smit (founder of The Eden Project) on radical climate solutions, is Vice Chair of the University of Wales and lives with his wife on a regenerative farm in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). Beth Collier is a Nature Allied Psychotherapist and Ethnographer who teaches natural history and woodland living skills. Beth is the Founder and Director of two organisations: Wild in the City, supporting well-being through relationships with nature with a focus on supporting people of colour; and Nature Therapy School, which offers professional training for psychotherapists in Nature Allied Psychotherapy. John Cook is a lifelong farmer in the North York Moors National Park. He’s always had an interest in managing landscapes for nature and food production. John has previously been on the board of an agricultural marketing cooperative and his local NHS Trust. Rachel Solomon Williams is Executive Director at Aldersgate Group, a cross-sectoral alliance of businesses and other organisations championing a prosperous, environmentally sustainable economy. Rachel has over 20 years’ experience of working in environment and climate policy, primarily as a civil servant but with time spent in the private sector. We’re so happy to have them on board! Yesterday’s King’s speech was short on nature. The new government must recognise the amazing things it can do for us 🌱 and how rewilding offers the big, bold positive change we need.  In the speech, important first steps were taken to deliver the new Government’s agenda for nature and climate through investing in renewable energy and tackling the cavalier, profit-maximalist approach by water companies that has led to the sewage scandal.  But it fell short of seeing nature as a solution as well as something to be restored.  Rebecca Wrigley, Rewilding Britain Chief Exec, lays out how rewilding can and should be a key part of the UK Government’s delivery plans – on nature recovery, water pollution, jobs, flooding and supporting farmers – and offers huge opportunities to integrate our responses to the climate and nature emergencies. These two very different projects show how Somerset can be wilder 🐾 WWT Steart Marshes is a 'working wetland' that is partially managed by large herbivores to allow a mosaic of different habitats to flourish, following an innovative realignment of the saltmarsh to benefit wildlife and people. While the site attracts huge numbers of bird species, it also provides flood protection, nature-based enterprise and a natural recreation space for local communities. Somerset Wildlife Trust's Honeygar site is earlier in its nature restoration journey but is already seeing early signs of recovery, conceived as a vital missing link in the ecological network of the Avalon Marshes through working at a landscape-scale and restoring natural processes. This former dairy farm is the Trust's first site to be approached under rewilding principles and will be closely monitored to see how the diverse and dynamic recovery progresses. A belated thank you to these two sites for hosting some of us recently! T-B, L-R: 1 2 - SWT Honeygar 3 4 WWT Steart Marshes All photos Katherine Gulika / Rewilding Britain #Rewilding

🌱 We're urging the new PM to heed the 87% of Labour voters who are worried about wildlife decline. Joining with the other march organisers, we're calling for the UK Government to pledge to make nature and climate a top priority ⬇️  60,000 people took to the streets to demand politicians #RestoreNatureNow. Watch this space as we build on the amazing momentum you've given us during the election period. It's an exciting time for rewilding and we plan to seize the opportunities a new government brings. #Rewilding
