Our Pilot Reef Movie is live 🎬 🐠 When we started Resting Reef, we had no clear roadmap, only the concept and the drive to make it happen. One of the first times we shared our vision to place our memorial reefs underwater, an expert we were having conversations with told us we were naive and had no interest in being further involved in our project. His words made us doubt ourselves for a minute, but somehow, motivated us to make it a reality. Looking back, after three years of going through this journey, we can say he was right—at that stage we were naive, but naivety was one of our greatest strengths. It’s what got us here. It was also what pushed us to seek advice and wisdom from experts to fill the gaps and collaborate with them to succeed, which ultimately led us to secure support from Innovate UK. We’re excited to officially present the Resting Reef's pilot reef movie. A 5-minute film capturing the highlight of our vision becoming a reality. It was an achievement that was built with a lot of effort and love. We hope that you enjoy the movie and be inspired by what a little bit of naivety can achieve. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our team who poured their hearts into it. Wei Zhang, you've been the best Design and Production Lead we could ask for. Dr Zach Boakes, thank you for opening doors for us, for always being kind, and for proactively making things happen. Please share this movie with anyone you believe will enjoy and be interested in what we are doing. 🎥Wisnu Adit

Resting Reef was part of the Greenhouse Demo Day by Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation, the climate innovation community at The Royal Institution from Imperial College London. It was an incredible opportunity to showcase our progress and connect with an inspiring audience of investors, researchers, and sustainability enthusiasts. Joining the Greenhouse accelerator was a big milestone for us. It's well known as one of the top climate and sustainability programmes in the world! Our time there provided us with great things, from masterclasses on sales, communication, and environmental impact assessment, to mentoring support from the incredible Michael Saxton, Connor Brooks, and Matthew J Robinson. We’re very grateful for the support of the entire Undaunted team, especially Jim Shaikh, Nicole Bachanova, and Alyssa Gilbert, who have guided us and cheered us every step of the way. This experience also helped us refine our pitch and gave us even more confidence in presenting our work—preparing us for future investor presentations when the time comes! If you'd like to witness it yourself, check out our pitch here: https://lnkd.in/eBtt6fuZ #ClimateInnovation #Sustainability #Greenhouse #RestingReef #DemoDay #Pitch

For our pilot reef, we were honoured to work with Mangku Ode, a local expert with years of experience creating artificial reefs. Leading a team of fishermen, Ode guided us in building and safely placing our reef structures in the sea. This wasn’t just about constructing reefs—it was about learning from those deeply connected to the ocean. 🌊 "In my opinion, the idea of making artificial reef structures in this way is really interesting and it has been a real learning experience for me. It’s been fantastic. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn about this new and different method of building artificial reefs. I am thankful for this." - Mangku Ode As we move forward, we’ll continue collaborating with local stakeholders to ensure a mutual exchange of knowledge and respect for the environment. 🎥 Wisnu Adit and Putu Cavalera #Sustainability #Collaboration #ArtificialReefs #LocalCommunities #Conservation #RestingReef

A quick recap of the first day of placing our pilot reefs underwater 🌞 After finishing crafting our reef structures, we began the underwater placement process, which mainly involved two stages: Phase 1: A few days earlier, our Head of Restoration and Conservation, Dr Zach Boakes, scouted and identified the ideal site in need of restoration, and marked the area to be able to locate it from the water surface. Phase 2: Using traditional boats, we transported each reef structure to the selected site and carefully lowered them into the water with ropes arranged using a method developed by Ode and Mangku, to secure the reefs. Part of the team helped from the boats (Wei Zhang 💪), while others snorkelled nearby to ensure each reef was properly placed on the seabed. Once the reefs were lowered into the water, the team dived the next day to arrange them. Stay tuned for more details on this coming soon! 📸 Wisnu Adit and Putu Cavalera

Here’s the incredible team that achieved the underwater placement of our reefs in Bali 🙌 To be able to get to this moment, part of the Resting Reef team became certified PADI divers and trained days before the placement to be able to actively participate in the process. Once there, the underwater reef placement was guided by our Head of Restoration and Conservation, Dr Zach Boakes, who is also an experienced dive master. The process involved activities like setting up our diving equipment, creating a plan for placing the reefs in the correct time and order, and even learning how to communicate with hand signals underwater! We were fortunate to collaborate with local pro divers from Tianyar Village, who already had experience setting up artificial reefs in their area. We learned so much from them 💙 Special thanks to North Bali Reef Conservation for their support. Stay tuned for more soon! #RestingReef #BaliPilot #Restoration #UnderwaterReefs #Collaboration #Teamwork 📸 Putu Cavalera

Collaborating with local stakeholders is key to long-term impact! For our pilot reef, we have been working with the local community of Tianyar Village in Northern Bali, to develop activities from reef craftsmanship to placement and, in the coming months, the monitoring of our reefs. Our approach identifies areas in need of marine restoration, while actively engaging local coastal communities and NGOs. We utilise non-extractive, non-economic-colonisation methods, valuing the input of the community, and making them part of the journey to determine where and how we can make the most positive socio-economic impact! #MarineRestoration #CommunityEngagement #Sustainability #RestingReef 🎥 Wisnu Adit Wei Zhang

We are excited to share the final result of our pilot memorial reefs in Bali! During our time there, we crafted 14 reef structures, some using our unique formula (incorporating ethically sourced horse ashes) and others as a control without ashes to compare bioreceptivity. These reefs had two designs and incorporated a base as an anchoring mechanism. We produced them through a shared-knowledge approach with the community, combining our technology with local expertise and materials. The small imperfections are a natural part of the process, as each reef is partly handmade, giving each a distinct and unique character. 🪸❤️ #Sustainability #MarineConservation #Innovation #Collaboration #Bioreceptivity #RestingReef 📸 Wisnu Adit and Wei Zhang

Curious to learn how we design and craft our memorial reefs? 👷♀️ The design and engineering process for our memorial reefs is a collaborative effort, guided internally by our Head of Design and Production Wei Zhang. Wei is an experienced designer with skills in both traditional methods such as ceramic craftsmanship and advanced production techniques like 3D printing. On top of that, he also has expertise in bio-material exploration! For our production method, Resting Reef also partnered with CubeX Industries and BlueCube marine, led by Charles Phelines, who has been supporting us from the very beginning. BCM provided us with technical expertise in reef design and mould creation, guiding us through the complexities of production. Special thanks to Al and Selva, whose skills and knowledge contributed to our pilot reef success! Before defining the final design, we also run numerous feedback sessions with engineers, oceanographers, and marine biologists to ensure that the final characteristics of our reefs fit the marine environment. Once all of that was in place, the involvement and knowledge of the local community in Bali are crucial. Throughout the craftmanship process of our pilot reef, they helped us with aspects like developing our reef anchoring mechanism, and adapting our formula to the local materials available! #Sustainableinnovation   #Marineconservation   #Designengineering  #Reefrestoration   #Collaborativecraftsmanship 📹 Wisnu Adit
