RECOUP have released the updated version of 'Recyclability By Design' Under the guidance of the RECOUP Board, and the RECOUP ‘Recyclability by Design’ Steering Group, the 11th version of RBD offers guidelines to help Packaging Technologists and buyers ensure that their plastic is presented in the best way possible to the recycling chain. RECOUP work with colleagues in the industry to ensure the document is aligned to the UK recycling infrastructure. As the UK recycling industry is constantly changing, the document will be reviewed and updated to reflect these changes, including new technologies and methods which will decide which plastic packaging is recycled in the UK. The work is funded from memberships, and we are grateful for your support. The report can be downloaded from the RECOUP website at https://lnkd.in/eFiSHvPV #PlasticPackaging #PackagingDesign #Recyclability

It wasn’t long ago the ambition for the UK was to be world leaders in recycling, but this news reaffirms an ongoing dismantling of the UK plastic recyclers infrastructure. Huge increases in energy costs and operational challenges aside, UK recyclers are increasingly commercially unviable due to having to compete with cheap imports of virgin packaging and unverified packaging with recycled content from countries with a significantly lower cost base. However, the direction can be altered to provide genuine commercial support, reduce fraud in the system and start to address the unlevel playing field UK recyclers are competing in. There needs to be: An absolute focus on verification and enforcement of unverified material with recycled content from non-UK and EU markets; and An urgent review and overhaul of the Packaging Recovery Note (PRN) system to provide a stable and commercially supportive funding stream to give inherent value in the material and targeted funding is needed the most. https://lnkd.in/eAswuppw

This week the team got in the mood for #Halloween by dressing up for a day in the office. Outfits were composed of pre-loved costumes, charity shop finds, repurposed items that we already had at home and hand-made accessories!

RECOUP worked alongside partners ( Pragmatic, The University of Sheffield and AMRC Cymru) on the UK Research and Innovation funded project TRACE (Technology-enabled Reusable Assets for a Circular Economy) which was focussed on addressing some of the challenges that prevent large-scale reuse. Our work was focussed on reusable packaging design with part of this work being a case study looking at how RFID technology is utilised within reusable packaging and reuse systems. Featuring case studies from re-universe, Circular&Co., Fyllar and kleen hub | TAP&REUSE™⚡ Read the case studies on our website at > https://lnkd.in/ev79Bu3b #RFID #reuse #reusablepackaging #packagingdesign #circularty #sustainablepackaging

“What’s the point? It’s not like I’ll be able to afford my own home and we’re all going die from Climate Change anyway.” As our Education & Engagement manager, Kate Sullivan, recently experienced when helping her son revise for his exams, some statements can really make you take a step back and think. Are we being overwhelmed with information about climate change without being given any sense of hope or encouragement to make things better? In our latest blog Kate explores how we could inspire a more positive and can do attitude by making our sustainability efforts more relevant to young people.
