Earlier this week, we partnered with the wonderful team at Recorra for a rewarding beach cleanup. It was incredible to see everyone come together with a shared goal: to protect our environment and make a real difference. 🌍💪 In only one hour, we managed to collect over 15kg of waste, which Recorra expertly took care of in an eco-friendly way. While it might seem like a small amount compared to the vast amount of litter ending up on our beaches and in our waters each day, every consistent small step brings us closer to a healthier planet. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made this possible. We’re excited to continue championing environmental efforts! 💚🌱

Have you caught up with our Net Zero Strategist Kirsten Zoe Smith? Every month, she posts her regular ‘Carbon Catchup’, sharing Recorra’s progress and her work managing our transition to #netzero. Catch up with Kirsten below! #WasteManagement

    Net Zero Strategist at Recorra

It's almost the end of July, so I'm back with another 'Carbon Catchup', where I share Recorra's progress towards #netzero. The highlight of the month was a trip I took with the team to Cory Environmental, our Energy from Waste (EfW) partner. Cory process and transform waste into byproducts that can be reused as road aggregate, breeze blocks, reclaimed metal, and energy. I was there to tour the site and better understand their process and their carbon capture plans (I'm going to do a separate post on this part). I learnt a huge amount about just what happens to our general waste when we pass it over to the incinerator. Warning - general waste is not sorted prior to incineration - so when you put recycling in the general waste, thinking it must get sorted anyway - it won't! Make sure you recycle everything you can :) The rest of this month's work has been focused on data and carbon accounting- we're trawling through lines of procurement data as I write this. It's rather nitty-gritty work and involves continuously making decisions about how to process data accurately, while keeping the task manageable. Due to how opaque carbon accounting can be, I wanted to mention a few heroes working in this space. Firstly, the incredible Mike Berners-Lee who's detailed work on emissions factors is incredibly helpful. His books 'There Is No Planet B', and 'How Bad Are Bananas?' deserve all the praise they receive. The other hero (amongst others) that I've been referencing a lot is Hannah Ritchie - how many people make their raw data available to freely download? The website Our World in Data is just a fantastic resource that we've been using to create some tailored services for our industry. I've got a bunch of climate books on my reading list, and her book 'Not The End Of The World' is on there. Finally, a bit on the client side - I was at 30 Fenchurch yesterday, assisting our sustainability consulting team with a Lunch and Learn and trying out some new content. The whole team does great work, and I'm working to provide the climate context to everything Recorra does to advance real recycling. A busy month! But lots to be excited about going forwards.

We hosted Atlas London on a beach clean at Gabriel’s Wharf, London! The team removed over 22kg of waste from the beach, preventing plastic and other waste materials from entering the river and sea. Good job, team! 🌊 #PlasticWaste

Last month, Broadgate hosted 200 children for various events as part of British Land’s Young Readers initiative.     Our Head of Sustainability Matt Penrose and Sustainability Consultant Tia Patel ran a recycling race, helping teach kids about recycling and why it is important – whilst having fun, of course. They learnt what items go in each waste stream and how to segregate their waste. ♻

I'm super proud to have facilitated 200 children visiting Broadgate in one day, as part of our Young Readers initiative. There was a real excitement for the variety of events I had lined up, which increased further when each child got to pick a book, to take home and keep. The best bit for me was in inspiring local children to see Broadgate as an open and friendly place, a place where they are welcome to enjoy and develop their careers and where they may work or visit when they grow up. With National Literacy Trust we had two primary schools spend the Young Readers day with us, immersing themselves into the world of books and stories. They had their curiosity sparked by workshops and storytelling. Mayer Brown explained intellectual property law using the amusing example of Colin the Caterpillar (the one when all the other markets created their own versions), Recorra organised a recycling race and Q&S Limited (Quality & Service Ltd) counted pollinators! We sneaked some green skills into the day and visited the hidden corners. Thank you to British Land Danielle White Joanna Sampson Vanessa A-Acquah Philippa Bradbury Courtney Watts Matt Penrose Tia Patel Sue Payne Jamie Westcott Wendy Shearer Hakan Sivetoglu Orsolya Suveg Adonica Simmons Nick Oram for helping to create a memorable experience!
