📊 Poll Results: How will the Autumn Budget affect tech hiring in the UK? The UK Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves announced the UK’s Autumn Budget last week, with changes to taxation and funding affecting our sector. Before the announcement, we asked our followers if they thought the changes would have a positive or negative impact on hiring, and almost half of respondents anticipated a negative impact. Let’s see if they were right by focusing on the main changes affecting hiring: 💷 National Insurance Contributions The Government is increasing the rate of employer National Insurance contributions (NICs) from 13.8% to 15% and reducing the per-employee threshold at which employers become liable to pay National Insurance (the Secondary Threshold) from 6 April 2025 to £5,000. These changes will raise costs for employers, which could deter tech companies, particularly startups and SMEs, from expanding their workforces, therefore reducing vacancies across the sector. 💰 Capital Gains Tax (CGT) CGT is tax charged on the profit made from selling capital assets. CGT is being raised, with the lower rate of CGT (for basic rate taxpayers) rising from 10% to 18% and the higher rate (for higher rate taxpayers) rising from 20% to 24%. This rise could curb investment, affecting firms seeking growth capital—often critical in tech sectors reliant on venture and private equity funding. 👨🔬 Rise in funding for The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). The DSIT is responsible for both delivering key tech policies and digitally overhauling Whitehall. Its current budget of £12.7bn will grow to £15.1bn in the 2025/26 financial year, which could spur demand for tech roles, especially in digital infrastructure and cyber security. 📚 Research and Development The Chancellor announced £20.4 billion in investment for UK R&D to drive economic growth including £500million to Project Gigabit. This initiative aims to expand high-speed internet access, potentially fostering regional tech innovation and job creation nationwide. Taking into account these factors, it appears that operational costs may increase for tech businesses, creating a short-term dip in hiring. However, targeted investments in tech infrastructure and R&D could stimulate hiring in specialised tech areas. 👉 What are your thoughts on the budget? We spent our morning at Manchester Piccadilly train station to raise awareness of Wrap Up, a campaign by Human Appeal which collects and distributes warm winter coats to vulnerable residents across the UK. The current cost of living crisis continues to bite down hardest on those least able to cope, with sky rocketing fuel and food costs leaving the UK’s most vulnerable people out in the cold, making donations this year more important than ever If you choose to donate, your spare winter coat will be re-homed with a charity to support the homeless, refugees, children living in poverty or people fleeing domestic violence. Last year, Wrap Up was able to hand out over 20,000 coats to those most in need, so let's help them beat that record this year. You can donate at hubs across London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Leicester, Bradford and Luton.
