Cracking second day at Creative Cities Convention in Bristol Beacon. Apart from meeting like-minded colleagues both old and new, highlights included: Alex Mahon telling us that C4 want 'tough and grainy' British representation on screen, realistic and not parochial (no 'kilts and shortbread' in Scotland!) in a sparky conversation with Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees OBE; Julian Bellamy in optimistic mood with Grant Mansfield, saying that he believes all the current issues in broadcasting are temporary (he's right, of course); an exhilarating panel on 'landmark' TV (this made me very jealous - how do I go from Daytime to Landmark?!? Answers on a postcard...); the fantastic Laura Mansfield on her new role as CEO at Screenskills; and all rounded off with a brilliant and thoughtful speech by David O. about Bristol's unfortunate history and the symbolic role of the convention venue itself. All in all an invigorating couple of days, and although there are no easy answers to the current predicament in TV, it's still an amazing industry to be a part of, and the hope is that new and exciting opportunities could well be just around the corner.
