Heated debates among my students are sometimes fueled by misinformation—a symptom of the broader #TruthDecay phenomenon in America. Here are some self-reflections about how I (try to) deal with these difficult classroom exchanges ⤵ https://lnkd.in/eGqh_mgw #TruthDecay—the diminishing role of facts in American public life—isn't a problem that any one of us can solve, but my classroom has become a laboratory for countering it. Countering #TruthDecay in my classroom means setting a ground rules for debates. Students agree ✔️on what constitutes a reliable source ✔️on what types of evidence can be used to support an argument ✔️to treat one another with dignity. To prevent misinformation from taking over debates, the students and I work hard to 🔍 recognize bias in sources we consult 📚 cross-reference multiple sources ✅ use fact-checking websites.
