Important news from Historic England as they release their latest Advice Note on adapting historic buildings for energy and carbon efficiency. Having been consulted on the draft edition of the advice note, we're happy to see this significant step forward in outlining what an acceptable level of change in response to climate change looks like. In June, we announced our 26 National Award winners, recognising the UK's best new architecture and providing us with insight into the country's design and social trends. Winning projects stretched across the country from Northern Ireland to Scotland down to the south of England. Take a look below.

These striking red chimneys at Oxburgh Hall were carefully rebuilt using new handmade red brickwork and sculpted in-situ to replicate the highly decorative masonry as part of the 'Raise the Roof' restoration project at the National Trust property. A total of 14,000 roof tiles, 14 dormer windows, and 27 distinctive chimneys were repaired during the project, with highly-skilled local craftspeople engaged to best inform the restoration of the 15th century manor. Last night I was in Hastings, celebrating the 100th birthday of the Observer Building. A building that has been derelict for a third of its life, but is now a thriving community-owned workspace and venue (expertly transformed by the amazing If_Do). If you've not heard of Hastings Commons, seek them out... hastingscommons.com They take derelict and difficult buildings around Hastings into community custody, transforming them into social spaces, homes and workspaces that will always be affordable and open to all. I'm so pleased Purcell are able to work with such an awesome bunch. They are a truly inspirational example of how grass roots organisations (or mycelium networks as CEO Jess Steele puts it) are driving a just transition, placing people and community at the heart of everything, and giving neglected old buildings a new lease of life. Thank you Sarah Castle for hosting such an enjoyable discussion, it's so clear your heart and soul has gone into that project. As the architects behind this transformative initiative, Purcell are proud to be part of creating a new Wrexham Museum and the Football Museum for Wales.
