Pump Aid

Non-profit Organizations

We are working to end water poverty and aid dependency in remote, rural communities in Malawi.

About us

Pump Aid is a UK registered international non-governmental organisation that's core purpose is the delivery of affordable, appropriate and sustainable technologies to meet the water and sanitation needs of rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently many rural communities are forced to drink water from rivers, lakes and open, unprotected wells, where the water is left vulnerable to contamination from waterborne diseases and is often many kilometres from home. Pump Aid strives to help rural communities access clean water, which exists as little as 2-3 metres underground in some areas. Since 1998 Pump Aid has worked in Zimbabwe, Liberia and Malawi to deliver over 9,500 Elephant Pump water projects, transforming the lives of more than 1.35 million people. Pump Aid has technical expertise in well digging and deepening, sustainability, construction and installation of low-cost hand pump called Elephant Pump and training of beneficiaries in pump installation, maintenance and repair. Alongside our technical expertise Pump Aid also has over 19 years experience working with corporate partners. The impact we have on the ground is significant and sustainable so brands know that by supporting Pump Aid they are leaving a legacy they can be proud of.

Before becoming an Area Mechanic with Pump Aid-Beyond Water, Maria spent countless hours each day searching for a functioning water point. Maria enrolled in our training and mentoring scheme where she learnt the technical skills to install, repair and maintain a variety of pumps. Today, thanks to her skills in water point repair and maintenance, communities in rural Malawi have reliable access to clean, safe water. The additional income has enabled Maria to upsize her home, buy livestock and buy a new bike so that she can travel between communities more quickly. Your support makes stories like Maria's possible!💧

This month we’re focusing on our partnership with Pump Aid as part of our #socialimpact spotlight series https://bit.ly/3KTwMAF. Urenco is delighted to support the charity’s work training local people in Malawi as water entrepreneurs to maintain, fit and supply water pumps, creating jobs and ensuring there is a sustainable way to access clean water. Pump Aid has been developing sustainable water solutions in rural sub-Saharan Africa for over 25 years, helping provide nearly 1.5 million people with access to safe and clean water in the process. Recently, colleagues from Urenco’s European sites volunteered their engineering talent and experience to help Pump Aid resolve some of its practical challenges in ensuring the pumps are efficient and #sustainable. We’re all looking forward to seeing how these improvements can be further trialed and implemented on the ground. You can read more about Urenco's engineers-turned-volunteers and the Challenge project below: https://bit.ly/3WbmzVV

The TeamWork virtual internship was such a great experience. Working with Pump Aid allowed me to gain valuable insights into the real-life challenges of bringing water access to Malawi. It gave me a new understanding of how a social enterprise model could serve NGOs as a good option for reaching financial sustainability and developing local community empowerment. Our international team, united in our commitment to the project, significantly enhanced the learning experience. Big thanks to Zoë, Madhushika, Qing and Zhuoshan for your dedication, which proved the effectiveness of teamwork and the value of diversity in tackling complex challenges. I'm also grateful for the mentorship of James Kitt and the perspectives he kindly shared with us from his extensive experience in the #WASH sector, and to the university support team Cathy Spinage and Luz Imbriano for encouraging us during the program. #monashteamwork #virtualinternships #monashwarwickalliance

#ThrowbackFriday to last July when Pump Aid was one of the 3 beneficiaries of the £34,000 funds raised by Rotary Harpenden in Harpenden’s Classics on the Common show! Thanks to your support, we were able to double the value of that donation during our Big Give Campaign. We also got to demonstrate our easy-to-use household pump, showcasing how simple solutions can make a big difference. 💧 Community power is incredible, and we invite you to join us in making a lasting impact. Support us with your community groups and help us bring sustainable water solutions to those who need them most. 🌍 https://lnkd.in/ep4tKsNy #community #water #sustainable #malawi

We've developed a range of improvements that could be made to pumps in Malawi to improve people's access to clean water. Supported by our partner Pump Aid, we came up with a number of prototypes including a household and irrigation pump, one solar-powered. Great example of what determination and hard work can achieve through engineering! Read more here: 👉 https://bit.ly/3WbmzVV #sustainability #netzero

Meet Agatha, a remarkable woman who went from baker to pump mechanic with Pump Aid. Agatha believes women should lead in fixing water points because they're the ones who carry the burden of collecting water. Before this, she served as a water point committee member in her village. Joining our Area Mechanics network offers her a chance at sustainable income while making a difference in her community. 🛠💧 #worldbakingday #water #empower
