Only 9% of UK adults trust brands' climate commitments ❗ And 25% believe businesses consistently engage in greenwashing 🌱 These findings from dentsu and the Conscious Advertising Network are telling. Now, more than ever, brands and retailers must commit to genuine, transparent climate action from businesses. In the UK and beyond, there is a huge need and opportunity for brands to differentiate with green claims that consumers can trust. https://lnkd.in/eYuEGbqh

I am proud to share that sustainability communications platform Provenance has raised $5 million in their successful Series A funding round, led by S4S Ventures. Provenance is a data platform that validates and amplifies sustainability claims for over 230 Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) brands and retailers such as Unilever, Estee Lauder, THG, Princes and Arla, across 18 markets globally. Through its data platform, framework and publishing capabilities, Provenance enables businesses to be transparent about sustainability and inform consumers about their social and environmental impact in a way that’s accurate, unambiguous and substantiated at the point of sale. Congratulations to Jessi Baker and her team for their success.

Provenance reposted this
We are delighted to announce our investment in Provenance, and work with the talented Jessi Baker and Astrid Chang! Tackling the climate crisis and social inequalities are some of the biggest global challenges facing our generation – and marketing teams, retailers and agencies have a unique and crucial part to play in driving change. Provenance exists to empower marketers to put validated data directly in the hands of the consumer, in a way that’s compliant with regulation, is scalable and drives growth. Yes, all those goals can be accomplished at the same time! The problem that Provenance solves cuts across brands, retailers and agencies. The reason why we invested comes down to two simple things: (1) Mitigating the risk of greenwashing The funding comes as there is growing pressure on businesses to authenticate and communicate their social and environmental impact transparently, with a raft of new regulations aimed at addressing misleading green marketing claims. And the fines are VERY meaningful. Regulations put brands and retailers at risk of fines of up to 4% of global turnover if published claims fall short of criteria. Companies such as Zalando, ASOS.com, Boohoo Group PLC have all come under fire in Europe, while companies such as Walmart and Kohl's have been subjected to fines by the FTC in the United States. Agencies are often stuck in a difficult position - being asked to write about (creative) and distribute (media) claims they may not be comfortable with, without a trusted independent partner to rely on. Provenance has the largest database of validated sustainability claims, featuring 1.8 million products across 10,000 brands. This enables retailers to save time, complexity and risk in validating multiple brands’ sustainability claims. Brands also save time and effort by managing and syndicating validated claims to multiple retailer channels easily from one tech platform. And agencies get a piece of mind. (2) Sustainability as a lever for growth Beyond mitigating risk, the Provenance platform enables businesses to turn sustainability from a cost centre to a profit centre. By harnessing the underlying data, retailers such as Cult Beauty are driving up to 35% higher purchase rates for participating brands through product search and filter, conversion rate optimization and loyalty programs. Perhaps this is not a surprise - younger generations have shown us, time and again, that they align their purchasing choices with their values. Validated claims have an immediate positive impact on revenue, so why not put them in front of your consumers? If you're a marketer, retailer or an agency, give it a ponder.. there is a lot to lose and even more to gain. Onwards and upwards team Provenance!
