An international development organisation putting ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world.
About us
We are an international development organisation putting ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world. We help people find solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems. Challenges made worse by catastrophic climate change and persistent gender inequality. We work with communities to develop ingenious, lasting and locally owned solutions for agriculture, water and waste management, climate resilience and clean energy. And we share what works with others, so answers that start small can grow big. We’re a global change-making group of problem solvers, knowledge mobilisers and expert advisors. We work together to multiply our impact and help shape a world that works better for everyone. The group consists of a UK registered charity with community projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, an independent development publishing company and a technical consulting service. We believe in the power of small to change the big picture. And that together we can take practical action to build futures free from poverty. Coming up next week! We will be speaking in four sessions at the Humanitarian Energy Conference 2024 hosted by the Global Platform for Action (GPA), one session at the Off-Grid Solar Forum 2024 and in five more discussions through colleagues from the Global Distributors Collective (GDC). We know the transformational effects that clean affordable energy can have, and we want everyone to have the ability to harness it. This is true for people’s lives and their livelihoods. We find solutions to affordability barriers and uncover the best business models to suit people’s needs. This can mean catalysing off-grid energy access markets and working with communities, the private sector, and governments. We’ll be discussing these and other novel approaches with other sector experts at #HEC24 and #GOGSFE24 in Nairobi next week: - Sharing insights from our energy work with hard-to-reach communities - Discussing market mechanisms to tackle affordability - Engaging the sector in the links between energy access in climate adaptation - Building partnerships to help speed roll out Mattia Vianello Denise Umubyeyi Robert Mutalindwa Alain Patience NIYIBIZI Tim Mwangi Zibusiso Ncube Thomas Stevenson and Russell Lyseight. Some monumental news! We’re leading a fantastic programme of work in the Andes Amazon region, helping nearly a third of a million people in Peru and Ecuador and maintaining vital biodiversity. The area covers more than eleven million hectares, is home to countless species and is a source of life and livelihood for nearly a million people, including seven distinct Amazonian indigenous groups. We’ll be working closely with indigenous people in the region so they can get hold of the finance they need to manage the land in the way they want to. This absolutely crucial piece of work is part of a £100m programme of work funded by the UK Government in six environmentally critical landscapes across the globe, with the potential to showcase how the world can more effectively address the closely connected crises of biodiversity loss and climate change. Find out much more about the project and exactly what we’ll be doing here: https://lnkd.in/euKymcFp It is going to be done with help from some incredible local and international organisations, so a massive shout out to our partners, listed below

The Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance's ‘Solutions’ series shares practical and replicable local knowledge through our work across the world on how to build resilience to climate hazards. The last Solution from the Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance, before it became the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance, explores how we have been working in collaboration with Imperial College London to test light detection and ranging (lidar) sensors in Nepal, Peru and Bolivia to improve flood #EarlyWarningSystems . So what makes lidar sensors so effective? - The measurement capability allows for continuous monitoring - They are easy to be installed and can be fitted to existing structures - They are low cost in comparison to high-tech monitors - The open-source nature of the sensors supports local maintenance - The software components can be scaled up conveniently and cost-effectively Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eizyW3kp You can also listen to the latest podcast which describes the use of lidar technology for river measurements in the Vilcanota watershed in Peru: https://lnkd.in/ezP2Ha9i

Poverty, climate, and biodiversity crises are all interlinked, so tackling them together is crucial. I spent August in the Andes Amazon in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia working with Practical Action en América Latina teams and partners from indigenous communities, as well as conservation and development organisations. Together, we are taking an integrated approach to tackling issues that are critical for their area, and for our world. In Peru and Ecuador, Practical Action will be leading a consortium restoring biodiversity, and increasing sustainable livelihoods for people living in and around 8 million ha of primary forests (an area larger than Costa Rica). We’ll also be connecting an essential conservation corridor that crosses the Peru-Ecuadorian border. Central to the consortium is the indigenous people’s organisation – Inter-Ethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle (AIDESEP) – and we’ll be working with eight indigenous people’s groups across Peru and Ecuador. They’ll be working alongside conservation organisations - Nature and Culture International, WWF (WWF Perú and WWF-Ecuador) and development organisations - Terra Nuova (Peru), COSPE Onlus (América Latina) - who have deep roots in community action. Collaborations like these that link with governments with long-term approaches to deal with the huge threats facing indigenous people and the forests that are essential, both for them and for the planet, and are what will make a difference. Our work in the Andes Amazon is just one of the six key areas of biodiversity that are being supported by the Biodiverse Landscapes Fund, from UK International Development over the next five years. We believe long-term, sustainable resilience can only be achieved by working with affected communities. By working together, we can assess current resilience levels and implement the most appropriate solutions to climate hazards. 2023 marked the hottest year on record, with a significant rise in the frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters. 3.8 billion people were exposed to heat and 1.5 billion people experienced it every single day. Incidents of heat and wildfires are becoming more frequent, causing greater losses. Reacting to this, the @Z Zurich Foundation is investing millions of pounds in an alliance we helped found which has now expanded its focus to become the @Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance. This clear signal from the private sector shows it is changing the way it deals with climate change. Preparation and early warning are key elements. Over the last decade our work with the Z Zurich Foundation has positively impacted the lives of over 3 million climate-vulnerable people across more than 350 communities worldwide. The Alliance’s initiatives have also influenced an increase in resilience spending of over $1.25 billion USD. ➡️ Read more on this new development including how wildfires undermined our work in Bolivia: https://lnkd.in/eScKB-er #ClimateResilience #ExtremeHeat #SustainableFuture #ClimateChange
