About us

Plymouth City Council is undergoing an exciting transformation programme which will radically change the way services are delivered across the city. Plymouth is a spectacular waterfront city which has seen many exciting changes over the last few years. These include the growth of Plymouth University, the redevelopment of sites such as the Royal William Yard, the opening of Plymouth Life Centre - one of the best sports and leisure facilities in the country- a growing events programme and a burgeoning reputation as a foodie heaven. Plymouth is an ambitious city and there are many exciting major changes ahead. Our reputation as a centre of excellence for marine sciences and engineering will expand as the City Deal programme provides a Launchpad for small companies and increases the space available for marine-related industries. Our universities continue to attract attention around the world and our schools, including the new University Technical College, increasingly work with industry to nurture future talent. Plymouth has a huge amount to offer, including an unrivalled lifestyle with its amazing green spaces, stunning waterfront and close proximity to some of the best beaches and landscapes in the UK, as well as all the advantages of a vibrant urban culture of a big city. This city is full of opportunity for the right people and businesses to work together to create one of Europe’s most vibrant waterfront cities where an outstanding quality of life is enjoyed by everyone.

New team supporting kinship carers in Plymouth   A new team has been created to support kinship carers, or special guardians, in Plymouth.   Kinship care is an umbrella term for when a relative or close family friend looks after a child most, or all, of the time.   This week (7 to 13 October) is Kinship Care Week, which provides an opportunity to celebrate the invaluable role that kinship carers play in children’s lives and society.   Plymouth City Council’s new Special Guardianship Support Team offers support for special guardians but also to people caring for children under informal care arrangements and Child Arrangement Orders.   Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gCa7aZ9C

The air quality across Plymouth has shown a marked improvement after the city’s busiest areas consistently met air quality targets over the past four years.   Recent reports have shown a steady improvement in air quality around Stoke Village, Tavistock Road, Mutley Plain, Royal Parade and Exeter Street, historically some of the areas with the highest levels of nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant mostly linked to car emissions.   These areas previously formed part of the Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) and each June the Council were required to submit air monitoring reports to DEFRA.   The monitored levels for nitrogen dioxide are compared to the government's air quality objectives (AQO), and show that for the last four years, even taking COVID-19 lockdowns into account, the pollutant levels have fallen below the required threshold.   Full story - https://lnkd.in/eH2rctYJ
