Plantlife is the global charity working to secure a world rich in wild plants and fungi.

About us

Plantlife is the global charity working to secure a world rich in wild plants and fungi. Founded in 1989, Plantlife has 15,000 members and supporters. Wild plants and fungi are the foundation of all life on Earth. Plantlife enhances, restores, protects and celebrates our natural heritage through working with landowners, other conservation organisations, public and private bodies and the wider public. Plantlife owns 23 nature reserves covering nearly 4,500 acres across England, Scotland and Wales. We were instrumental in the creation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, the Important Plant Area network and we are a member of Planta Europa, a pan-European network of over 60 wild plant conservation organisations. We are governed by a board of 12 trustees and have around 70 staff, located across the UK. We also support a team of 1500 volunteers who work in the field, at events and in our offices. A registered charity, Plantlife is funded by donations from its members and supporters, through grants and charitable trusts and through its pioneering land management advice and projects.

What the government does in its first 100 days can pave the way for five years of new policy and by acting now, the fortunes of wild plants and fungi could be transformed. As new ministers settle into their departments, we’ve written to the secretary of state calling on the government to: 🌱Commit to a Grassland Action Plan 🌳Establish a National Rainforest Fund 📝Legislate to end peat sales 🍄Show global leadership in species recovery These are the critical first steps to building a healthy and prosperous society underpinned by a thriving and resilient natural environment. And as time begins to run out, we are using our position to bring lasting and positive change to our natural world – for everyone’s sake. Yellow Rattle is the most important plant you need when creating a wildflower meadow 🌻 Without it, vigorous grasses can grow unchecked and smother the flowers you want to encourage. But how does it work: 🌱 Seeds germinate in early spring 🌿 Roots seek our roots of nearby plants, like grasses 💙 It draws nutrients and water from nearby plants 🌷 Leaving space for wildflowers to grow Yellow Rattle is clearly a very useful starting plant for a wildflower meadow, but it can a little tricky to establish. Right now is the perfect time to get collecting! 🌻 Volunteers have been out at our Three Hagges Woodmeadow Nature Reserve collecting yellow rattle seed from the wildflower meadow. We will spread this seed in areas of the meadow that are dominated by long grasses, enabling more delicate wildflower species to grow. Many thanks to Biffa Award for their generous funding, helping to improve the biodiversity of this wonderful nature reserve Follow our expert advice to get you started 👉 https://lnkd.in/e6vQnSHi #Meadows #BritishWildflowers #YellowRattle #Wildflowers #Volunteering #NatureReserve

What covers a third of Scotland’s land yet is hugely overlooked?    Grasslands! Though not all grasslands are equal. Much of Scotland is actually covered by monoculture grassland that’s overfertilized and doesn’t provide space for nature to grow and thrive🌱   But with careful management by farmers, crofters, and land managers, grasslands can be crucibles of life. These species-rich grasslands can support:  🌸Rare species, like Globeflower (Trollius europaeus) and Curlew  🐝Pollinators, like the incredibly rare Great yellow bumblebee  🐮Traditional crofting & farming livelihoods, producing food & fibre from the land  🌡carbon storage securely in grassland soils  🌊Climate adaptation, such as slowing and reducing the impact of flood waters  🗨Better air & water quality, through reduced use of artificial fertiliser    It’s time to make the most of Scotland’s grasslands. Read Plantlife Scotland’s new report on making the most of Scotland’s grasslands👇 https://lnkd.in/era4cBpB #Grasslands #Biodiversity #Meadows #Farming #Scotland #ScottishLandscape
