📢 70 international financial institutions representing assets worth USD 6.8 trillion are calling on petrochemical companies to address plastic pollution issues. Petrochemical companies are a major contributor to plastic production, which is forecast to triple by 2060, meaning petrochemical companies will become the primary driver of oil demand growth. As the plastic pollution crisis mounts and demands for a Global Plastics Treaty grow, petrochemical companies have stalled progress in negotiations by: 1. Resisting calls to include the full life cycle of plastics 2. Opposing the reduction of plastic production 3. Opposing the inclusion of polymer production in the treaty Petrochemical companies are exposed to significant plastics-related risks, which are financially material for corporates and their investors. Therefore, the collective Investor Statement requests petrochemical companies to: ➡ Disclose and define strategies ➡ Address toxic polymers and chemicals ➡ Develop sustainable infrastructure ➡ Establish governance ➡ Support international agreements Read the Investor Statement here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/dUrhB9fB #BeatPlasticPollution #GlobalPlasticsTreaty #PlasticPollution #Petrochemicals #ToxicChemicals #FossilFuels #INC4 #PlasticRisk #UpstreamSolutions #ClimateChange #Stewardship #ResponsibleInvestors

⚠❓ Why do we know so little about novel entities when they are so ubiquitous? ☣ Novel entities are human-created substances and synthetic chemicals not previously known to the Earth system, which are key drivers of environmental damage as well as being responsible for acute and chronic impacts on human health. 🌍 They are one of the nine planetary boundaries, which relate to key natural processes that regulate the stability of the Earth system, and the limits we must stay below in order to maintain a healthy planet. 🌊 Six of these boundaries have already been crossed. This week the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research announced that a seventh boundary – ocean acidification – is on the verge of crossing its threshold. 🌐 Novel entities are one of the existing planetary boundaries that have been crossed. Yet, due to insufficient data, it’s unclear how far this threshold has been surpassed. ⚖ One certainty is that due to the environmental and health impacts of novel entities, litigation and reputational risk is increasing for companies producing and using them. 🔍 Look out for our latest report ‘Novel Entities – A Financial Time Bomb’…coming soon. 📷 Photo credit: Planetary Health Check report. #PlanetaryBoundaries #NovelEntities #EarthSystem #ClimateChange #OceanAcidification

How can the financial services sector contribute towards a #NaturePositive future? 🌱 Over half of the global GDP is estimated to be moderately or highly dependent on #Nature. Therefore, financial institutions that underestimate the value of nature are likely to expose themselves to significant risks and missed opportunities. To secure a sustainable future, it's critical for the financial services sector to focus on the following priority actions and opportunities: 🌎 Build internal capacity to act on nature. 🌎 Develop financing policies, strategies and transition plans that favor nature. 🌎 Embed nature in risk management systems. 🌎 Develop robust nature-related reporting systems. 🌎 Engage with high nature-impact and high nature-risk businesses. To support this transition, guidance developed by Planet Tracker in collaboration with Business for Nature, the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Economic Forum outlines the sector-specific actions to ensure the financial services sector plays its part in halting and reversing #NatureLoss by 2030. 🔗 Read more: https://bit.ly/3rVLost

Calculus Carbon was proud to participate in #NatureAction100 at #ClimateWeekNYC where global leaders and experts convened to discuss aligning private sector ambitions with global biodiversity goals and exploring investor engagement as a critical lever for change. Key takeaways from the speakers: Jessica Smith emphasized the need to shift financial flows toward nature-positive investments to support global biodiversity goals better. Emil Sirén Gualinga highlighted the importance of respecting Indigenous rights and ensuring real progress on the ground, particularly in areas impacted by extractive industries. Peter Elwin stressed that nature and climate are deeply interconnected, and transforming the food system is essential to address deforestation and climate change. Mary Beth Gallagher advocated for a rights-based approach to nature action, emphasizing the need to place local communities at the forefront of environmental and human rights decisions. At Calculus Carbon, we remain committed to enabling the deployment of institutional capital into large-scale #NaturebasedSolutions (NbS) projects, with a focus on the Global South, where nature-based infrastructure is crucial for sustainable development. #NatureAction #SustainableFinance #Biodiversity #GlobalBiodiversityGoals #NaturePositive #SustainableInvesting #RightsBasedApproach #HumanRights #IndigenousRights #ClimateAction #NatureBasedSolutions #NYCClimateWeek #CalculusCarbon

I had the privilege of hosting a fantastic roundtable discussion with Rolando Morillo, Hana Heineken, and Richard Freund yesterday on the increasing risks of plastic pollution from petrochemical companies. The timing couldn’t have been more fitting, as California just filed a ground breaking lawsuit against ExxonMobil, alleging it falsely promoted the recyclability of plastic. This makes California the first U.S. state seeking to hold an oil major accountable for plastic pollution. Petrochemicals and plastics are firmly on the agenda at New York Climate Week this year, with many insightful discussions taking place on this critical issue. Thank you to all the speakers and participants who shared their expertise on policy developments, litigation risks, and the necessary steps the industry must take to transition to safer, more sustainable practices. 📌 Investor Statement on Petrochemicals and Plastics: https://lnkd.in/eXSGj3sF 📌 Shareholder Engagement Guide on Petrochemical Companies and Plastic Pollution: https://lnkd.in/eyDtuqTW #NYCW #PlasticPollution #Petrochemicals

Recently, former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi presented his report on the “The future of European competitiveness” which focused on the challenges faced by EU business of being both productive and environmentally friendly. The report proposes about 170 policy recommendation across several sectors with a particular focus on the clean and digital transitions. It also suggested that significant additional investments of at least €750-800bn each year (4.4-4.7% of EU GDP) are needed to fund decarbonisation, digitalisation, and defence improvements. The report has generated intense debates among various stakeholders, especially on whether climate change and related policies were hindering EU economic growth. Planet Tracker and Carbon Tracker have identified four major points of discussion: 1️⃣ Is decarbonisation holding back EU growth? 2️⃣ Is the EU a leader in decarbonisation technologies? 3️⃣ Are climate change regulations a significant burden on EU companies? 4️⃣ What about nature and biodiversity?
