    Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to attend and speak at the British Universities' China Association (BUCA) Annual Conference held at Birmingham City University, our very first client! The event was an enriching experience where we discussed leveraging social media to enhance the reputation, recruitment and ranking of UK universities in China. During our session, He Huang highlighted the significant shift from mere enrolment to active engagement that we have observed over the past few years. This evolution reflects the growing importance of fostering meaningful connections and sustained interactions between UK universities and Chinese audiences. A big thank you to the brilliant BUCA committee for organising such a fantastic conference.     We had a fantastic night celebrating at the Swansea University Research and Innovation Awards 2024, where our Director Toni Kostanic proudly presented the award for Outstanding International Collaboration. We've been working with the Swansea team since 2021 to boost their QS rankings by targeting relevant academics and researchers on Chinese platforms. Swansea University climbed from the 474th spot in 2021 to the 298th in 2024, increasing their standing by over 100 places. This year's awards highlighted projects across various fields, from early diagnosis of diseases to tackling environmental challenges. The enthusiasm and dedication of all the researchers were truly motivating, and it was an honour to be part of such a vibrant community. A big thanks to the organisers for putting together such a memorable event. Events like these are a testament to the positive global impact that research and innovation can have!     Do shoppers in China have shopping festival fatigue? Our thoughts on 618 in 2024. ⬇ For the longest time, brands have been encouraged to participate in China's shopping festivals, kickstarted by the success of Singles Day 11.11. 618 was JD.com's answer to 11.11, but this 618 (June 18) is a bit different as JD.com hasn't released any data about the exact sales numbers. Is this a sign of economic downtown? Well, we think it's just part of a change in consumers' shopping habits. There are a lot of different e-commerce platforms in China now, and over the past few years, the emergence of social commerce has been nipping at the heels of big e-commerce platforms. Consumers are shifting how and when they shop, and brands need to move with the times and stop relying on quick wins with these shopping festivals, especially on traditional e-commerce platforms. Consumers are engaging with brands on social media platforms and, as a result, are converting them on these platforms, simplifying the journey for consumers and forcing brands to build more authentic social media relationships with their customers. Here's some of the success social commerce saw on RED and Douyin: • Early Preparation: RED started preparing for the 618 shopping festival in April with themed live-stream training sessions across various categories like e-commerce, jewelry, food, and lifestyle services. • New Advertising Product: Introduced “Grass Planting Direct Access,” allowing platform redirects to major e-commerce sites like JD.com, Alibaba, Pinduoduo, and WeChat Mini Programs. • Performance Metrics: • Orders during 618 were three times higher than the previous year. • Orders from live streaming were 5.4 times higher than last year. • Significant growth in high-value buyers and store broadcasts with sales exceeding 100,000 yuan. Douyin: • Sales Data: During the 2024 618 shopping festival, cumulative sales from e-commerce and live-streaming platforms reached 742.8 billion yuan. • Comprehensive e-commerce platforms contributed 571.7 billion yuan, a 6.9% decrease year-on-year, with Tmall leading, followed by JD.com and Pinduoduo. • Live-streaming platforms, led by Douyin, reached 206.8 billion yuan in sales. ---- Thoughts by: Jimmy Robinson https://lnkd.in/eJzgFXrB
