EU Parliament Committees: The Impact of the 'Cordon Sanitaire' Last week, following President von der Leyen's re-election, the European Parliament Committees met for the first time to elect their Chairs and Vice-Chairs.🏛️ The 'Cordon Sanitaire': In a strategic move, centrist groups worked together under a 'cordon sanitaire' to keep the far-right groups, Patriots for Europe and Europe of Sovereign Nations, out of top roles across the Parliament. This manoeuvre underscores the centrist coalition's commitment to maintaining a moderate and balanced legislative approach. Committee Leadership Breakdown: 🔹 EPP dominates with 8 Chairs and 31 Vice-Chairs 🔹 S&D holds 5 Chairs and 23 Vice-Chairs 🔹 Renew Europe secured 3 Chairs and 13 Vice-Chairs 🔹 ECR achieved 3 Chairs and 10 Vice-Chairs 🔹 Greens/EFA won 3 Chairs and 8 Vice-Chairs 🔹The Left gained 2 Chairs and 5 Vice-Chairs 🔹Patriots for Europe & ESN were kept out of top roles Why It Matters: The 'cordon sanitaire' reflects a significant effort to ensure that far-right ideologies do not influence key legislative processes. By securing these leadership roles, centrist groups aim to shape a more balanced and inclusive legislative agenda. This strategy highlights the importance of coalition-building and strategic alliances in navigating the complex political landscape of the EU. ⚖️

“The Democrats need to regroup and unify quickly in order for Vice President Kamala Harris to have a compelling chance against former President Donald Trump. The Democrats have no time to waste in terms of unification and campaigning,” according to Penta Group's Tiffany Watkins Ahern, who shared her views on the latest developments of the US presidential race with audiences of Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK)’s “The Close”. What the Democrats need to do in the lead up to the Democratic National Convention is to ensure that all President Joe Biden’s delegates continue to support Vice President Harris, and strike a balanced tone of reconciliation and unification. For business community, there may be comfort in knowing that Vice President Harris has been pro-business and pro-growth, and in the past shown friendliness towards businesses whilst also voiced out on consumer protection and people’s rights. Thank you Tiffany Watkins Ahern for sharing your insights, and thank you Carolyn Wright for inviting us to the show. 🌱💼 As the debate around ESG heats up, fund managers face a new dilemma: to share or not to share their ESG efforts? Our latest blog dives into the emerging trend of "greenhushing" and its implications for transparency, trust, and progress in the financial services sector. As the political backlash to ESG grows, a reactionary trend is emerging: "greenhushing", where companies deliberately underreport or conceal their ESG initiatives. We believe this is a reputationally damaging strategy. Companies should instead practise “eco-spotlighting” - the communication of localised messages derived from a consistent, global ESG narrative that resonates with all stakeholders. Discover why staying silent might not be the best strategy and how eco-spotlighting can give your firm a competitive edge. Ciara Lawler, Managing Director in our London office looks into out how your firm can adopt eco-spotlighting, click here https://lnkd.in/dgcBCGK2 #ESG #Sustainability #Finance #Greenhushing #EcoSpotlighting

🚀Evolving Priorities: Ursula von der Leyen's 2019 vs. 2024 Priorities 🚀 This morning, Ursula von der Leyen underscored a significant shift in the European Commission's focus compared to the past five years. The attached graph, elaborated by Penta, illustrates this evolution in priorities. 🔍 Defence and security mentions have surged, reflecting current geopolitical tensions. There's also a notable increase in references to energy, underlining an increasing focus on energy security alongside the green transition. Climate-related terms continue to be of relevance, suggesting a continuing commitment to environmental sustainability and the European Green Deal. 🌍 After the European Parliament voted to elect her for a second term, von der Leyen secured 401 votes in favour which was enough to elect her President of the European Commission. Her promises to enhance the EU’s economic competitiveness and stand by Ukraine resonated strongly, winning applause from MEPs. #EU #EuropeanCommission #UrsulavonderLeyen #PoliticalPriorities

The King's Speech tomorrow will mark the official opening of the new Parliament, serving as a key opportunity for the new Labour government to set out its legislative agenda for the coming months. Ahead of tomorrow's speech, Penta Group's Oliver Edelmann, Jennifer Lee and Bianca Schwam Auriemo examined the most significant manifesto published by each of the last five Labour leaders to understand how the relative "radicalism" and issue priorities in the Party's platform have changed over time. Key takeaways from the analysis include: 🔷 Keir Starmer's Labour Party manifesto is the most moderate since Tony Blair's in 1997. Starmer and Blair are the only leaders to have led Labour to a general election victory in recent memory. 🔷 Manifestos reveal continuity in Labour's priorities over time, particularly regarding housing and the National Health Service (NHS). They also unveil some changes, such as on social issues and foreign affairs. 🔷 Mentions related to jobs and the cost of living have increased in Labour manifestos between 1997 and 2024 as these issues have increased in salience amongst the British public.
