How do you manage legionella risks at work? Legionella bacteria thrives in warm water, between 20c - 45c. It feeds on sludge, scale, rust, algae and other organic material present in stagnant water. Effective controls are simple to apply, such as maintaining water temperatures, regular flushing of low-use water outlets and scheduled cleaning regimes. Look at the equipment and outlets associated with your building’s water system, such as pipes, pumps, heat exchangers, showers, and faucets. Alterations to the design can drastically reduce the risk of legionella. For instance, wet cooling towers can be replaced with dry air-cooling systems, and dead legs can be removed from older pipework. Record water temperature checks, and schedule regular inspections for bacterial growth. Inform staff of measures in place and monitor your management system to avoid complacency.
