🩺 5 Top Tips for Manual Handling in Healthcare 🩺 A lot of employers mistake manual handling for simple, harmless work that doesn’t need much thought. Despite it being seen as a low-risk activity in most workplaces, manual handling accounts for 1 in 3 of all workplace injuries. The law obliges employers to assess manual handling risks and reduce them as low as reasonably practicable. Manual handling in healthcare means a lot of things, so let’s unpack what it means with our 5 top tips: 1. Sweat the small stuff Plan your lift every time, whether it’s lighter items or heavy objects. Most lifts are routine actions, so train staff on staying vigilant with technique. This helps to avoid contorted or awkward postures that can cause serious injuries. 2. Handle people with care A lot of manual handling in healthcare relates to people with mobility issues, who can’t take simple actions like getting in and out of bed for granted. Discuss with the person how you’ll move them, referring to their personal care plan to move them safely and sensitively. 3. Remember TILE TILE stands for Task, Individual, Load and Environment. It’s a super quick way to sum up the various hazards types before you take on a manual handling job. Use this acronym as memory aid to plan lifts on the go. 4. Look after your lifting equipment HSE guidance advises not to lift at all if you can avoid it. Using hoists, slings, rails, and a host of other lifting equipment enables workers to carry out lifts that would be too dangerous to do manually. Maintain lifting equipment by scheduling regular ‘thorough examinations’ by a competent person. 5. Train your people regularly Training needs to be memorable, engaging, and above all, consistent. Schedule in regular training sessions, staggering the content over longer periods. This keep safety in the workplace conversation, helping workers to make safer choices.
