About us
As a charity SCO51306, we encourage dog owners to pick up a few pieces of litter on walks to protect animals, communities & the environment. We also educate on the consequences of littering. We are based in North East Scotland but have 26,000 members from over 70 countries worldwide across Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter) & LinkedIn removing over 38 million bits of litter annually. It is fantastic for mental health, positivity and well-being to take a simple, positive action which only takes a minute when we are out with our dogs anyway but which makes an immediate and visible difference. We aim to make picking up a few pieces of litter just a normal part of an everyday dog walk & with over 12 million dogs in the UK alone, the potential is huge. We are delighted to collaborate with all individuals, businesses and organisations who are dedicated to protect animals, communities & the environment. Education is a key charitable aim & we are happy to visit schools working towards their Green Flags, support young people looking for Duke of Edinburgh volunteering opportunities & give presentations to community groups or companies & other organisations. Paws on Plastic was founded as a social media campaign by Marion Montgomery while on long term sick leave from her job as a primary teacher. Inspired by her dogs who have always been attracted to plastic bottles & a British Council course encouraging people to create a social action around plastic pollution, she started the Paws on Plastic Facebook group simply encouraging dog owners to pick up a few pieces of litter on walks. The group grew & became a friendly, supportive community of people wishing to make a difference across the world. In September 2021 the movement became a Scottish charity which has consolidated its position & reputation in its collaborations with other organisations across Scotland, the UK & overseas. We are keen to collaborate with all who aim to protect animals, communities & the environment.

A HUGE well done & THANK YOU to our amazing The Kiltwalk Team today - Amy, Jane, Sue, Sarah and Marion plus our wee stars Fudge & Max - completing the Wee Wander from Broughty Ferry to Bonnie Dundee! Our fab team also removed masses of litter along the way - 3 pails full plus another plastic bag that was found along the way. Thanks to Dundee Sea Cadets for taking some for us. It was a beautiful day. Many thanks to all who have very kindly donated to the various fundraising pages. There’s still time to donate if you wish via the link in the comments below. Many thanks also to our family supporters, Katie, Johnny, Emma, Anne & Alistair and for Lene dog minding Paddy & Ted! #kiltwalkdundee #dundeedogs #litter #dogwalk #litterpicking #dogcharity #walkingthedog #whatsondundee #dayoutdundee #kiltwalk

A HUGE thanks to the 25 amazing volunteers who removed 13.325 kg of waste from Stonehaven Beach on Saturday morning on our August clean up with Plastic Free Stonehaven. (This adds to the 7.5kgs removed by 21 volunteers on Monday!) The total also includes just over 2 kg which was removed from the Leisure Centre and Skate Park area, most of which comprised cans and plastic bottles which were recycled. Strangest find was a large metal bar. As always lots of cigarette butts were picked up along with a disposable vape. Beach Clean Reward Certificates! We were delighted to present our very first Young Volunteer Beach Clean Reward Cards to Isla Brown and Hamish Thom to mark having done 5 beach cleans. Well done! This clean is part of our monthly community cleans with Plastic Free Stonehaven which take place on the first Saturday of every month, 10-11am. All are welcome and all equipment is provided. Follow our page to keep updated. They are part of PFS's ‘plastic free’ campaign which last month achieved Plastic Free status from Surfers Against Sewage - a community effort involving individuals, businesses and community groups and organisations taking simple actions to reduce the use of single use disposable items. #dogcharity #environmentalaction #beachcleanup #dogowners #PlasticFreeCommunities #stonehaven #aberdeenshire #beachclean #whatsonaberdeen #litter #litterpick #scotland

This simple activity is so much fun at Paws on Plastic SCO 51306 events - it certainly brings out the competitive streak in all ages!! If you're in the Edinburgh area this weekend, pop along and see our charity's stand at 'P in the Park' at Cousland Farm, Unleashed Dog Parks, Midlothian. We have a fab raffle to win gin or a bag from Barking Bags filled with dog treats and Adios Plastic LTD dog bags which they kindly donated or pose at our brand new Selfie Station. There are so many fun activities, stalls and events. We're really looking forward to it.
Congratulations to James, our top litterpick challenge winner over the 3 days of the The GWCT Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace at the weekend with an amazing time of 16.85 secs to get all the litter in the bucket!! What an awesome effort by James! Great to meet you & the girls! Here’s a peak of James in action. Hope you’re looking after your Paws on Plastic toy dog! Education is one of our key charitable aims and activities like this along with our talks and visits to schools, businesses and community groups with information on the impact that litter has on animals, communities and the environment are the ways in which we promote the message and encourage people to get involved. #litterpickchallenge #pawsonplastic #litter #scottishgamefair #sconepalace #environment

Happy #PlasticFreeJuly! Here are some ideas. Of course we could also add picking up litter on dog walks. We know from our 2022 Members Survey that a natural consequence of picking up litter regularly is a desire to reduce our own use of disposable, single use plastics and make our choices more sustainable. What simple sustainable swaps have you made or are you planning to make in July? Surfers Against Sewage Marine Conservation Society
