Last weekend was like a trip down memory lane at IMechE Formula Student. Together with Team PAVE United Kingdom, being able to talk about everything #selfdriving vehicle technology with #FS2024 attendees was a privilege. Refreshing to see the interest and the genuine inquisitiveness to know more about #selfdriving technology from all ages (participants, families and, the younger generation). Coming back to Silverstone circuit having done Formula Student back in 2010/2011, it was special. Thank you Gabbie Lau, Jerein Jeyachandran, and Xingyu Zhao for all the support in bringing PAVE UK to Formula Student. Huge thanks to Naomi Rolfe for making the event happen for us... And to David Webb and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles for supporting the Formula Student AI competition. The glitter in every participant's eyes and their sheer joy is one to experience. We need to continue to support and grow #FSAI. Thank you to all the volunteers and staff at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers who made #FS2024 happen. It is the tireless efforts of many that make an event like #FormulaStudent, a successful reality. Team PAVE UK will be back for Formula Student 2025... Congratulations to Louise Haigh MP for being appointed Secretary of State for Transport. We were very grateful to have Louise as our keynote speaker at the Cross-Domain Safety Assurance for Automated Transport Systems event last year and we were delighted to hear about her support for new transport technologies. Her vision of providing more connected transport in every part of the UK - especially under-served areas and communities - and putting the public at the heart of our transportation system is close to the heart of those of us working on automated transport.   I agree with the new government’s strong focus on upgrading our existing transportation system. Alongside this, government support for transport innovation is vital if we are to ensure that Britain is well-equipped and ready to embrace new transport technologies such as #AutomatedVehicles (AV).   AVs could bring billions to the UK economy, create more jobs, and make our roads greener. The recently passed Automated Vehicles Act is the world’s first AV legislation that highlights the ambition of deploying this technology on our roads safely and securely. But we can’t stop here. In the upcoming secondary legislation, the new government has a vital opportunity to give us a robust and detailed set of engineering requirements to ensure that we are developing this technology safely and responsibly.   Most importantly, we need to shift the mindset from just developing the technology to bringing the public on this #selfdriving technology journey. The public is paramount to this new technology and as end users, they should be involved and given a voice in the conversation. 𝐍𝐨 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜.   This February, we set up PAVE United Kingdom, a national initiative to deliver inclusive and accurate public awareness and education programmes on self-driving technology. With Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom as one of the founders, PAVE UK has been proactively engaging with the public and different local groups to understand their perspectives on AVs. We are planning to release some educational materials soon, which aim to accurately introduce this technology to the general public and address concerns about its safety and reliability.   Many more steps need to be taken before we can fully deploy AVs on the road, and we cannot do this without the government and the industry’s support.   I am very much looking forward to working closely with the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles in this exciting time, as we continue to introduce more accessible AVs and other new transport for the great benefit of this country and its people...
