🚀 We’re happy to announce that Parallel Carbon was selected for Black & Veatch’s IgniteX CDR program, backed by the U.S. Department of Energy. 👷♀️ Black and Veatch is among the largest and well-regarded EPC firms in the world and has 100 years of experience building critical global infrastructure. Their massive portfolio of #hydrogen and #carboncapture projects means we’ll be supported by incredible insights and expertise from decades of hands-on industrial development. ⚡ Over the next 12-weeks, we’ll work with Black and Veatch to prepare for our demonstration scale #DAC #H2 facility. We’re combining Parallel Carbon’s technology and Black and Veatch’s expertise to solve the complex challenge of delivering continuous DAC CO2 and clean H2 from intermittent renewable power. These efforts are the next step toward scaling our affordable process for #carbonnegative fuel and chemical production. 🌎 The IgniteX program puts us in good company with a cohort of other mission-aligned startups including Ebb Carbon, Heimdal, Holocene, Aeon Blue, and Elysia. I went to two CDR panels in two days this week, and these were my top takeaways: o There's a 10 billion tonne gap. We need to remove GHGs from the atmosphere by 10 billion tonnes and *nobody* knows how we're going to do it. Our best bets and plans and pipedreams are still billions short. o There's a second gap in carbon transportation. As in, most of the focus is on capturing or removing CO2, and then finding a way to use it or store it long term. There's gap in the middle, getting it from one place to another. If I was starting Carbon13's cohort in September, I'd be looking at this. o That and how to use the ocean to store carbon, including MRV: measurement, reporting, verification. It's got the biggest potential because it's so huge, but it's so incredibly difficult to measure and understand. o Another gap: capturing greenhouse gases which aren't CO2. (Carbon13 has two, Bluemethane and Climate-i, capturing methane and preventing fluorinated gas leaks respectively) o Any CDR startup needs a better business model than just selling credits. Credits aren't enough to fund CDR right now. You need other revenue streams. o To drive funding to CDR, we need to eliminate risk and make it a boring investment that drives 3% and lots of naps for investors. Answers on a postcard please. o The profile of the founders in CDR - often "non-traditional", often older, and with a broad skillset in the team and first hires - because CDR often encompasses so many disciplines. You need the commercial and commercialisation expertise in early, not just the technical. And that's a wrap on our 'Make Carbon Great Again' meetup. 😅 What a fantastic buzz there was around the carbon equation last night at Impact Hub London's amazing space in Euston. Four key takeaways from the event (for those silly enough to miss it): 1. Our oceans are as important as ever - they are the largest single source of carbon removal, sucking in 10GT of the stuff every year. An enlightening overview on the carbon removal ecosystem from Parallel Carbon's Aranzazu Carmona Orbezo. 2. Richard Barker *really* knows his stuff, giving an off-the-cuff 15 minute presentation on the economics and enablers of carbon storage/utilisation with pretty much zero warning. He highlighted the need for diverse portfolio of carbon capture solutions - not just from a financial perspective - but to ensure that we're prepared for the compromises we will have to make on the route to net zero. If we were founding a carbon removal company, we'd want to take money from Counteract. 3. Making carbon credits and then selling them is just one of the hammers into one of the nails. Great insight from Eli Mitchell-Larson of Carbon Gap on how this cannot be the primary business model for most startups, and how important it is to build a multi-faceted value proposition. 4.
